birmingham sunday
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.12" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"One of the
most adventurous groups that came into Original Sound in 1968 to record for Bill
Holmes' All-American label was the Carson City, Nevada-based Birmingham Sunday.
This sextet released the single "Prevalent Visionaries"/
"Egocentric Solitude" during their lifetime, but their album never
made it past the test pressing stage at the time. The album has since been
released in Italy. For this collection, "Egocentric Solitude" gives
you a good idea of how advanced their music was at the time - mellotron and all!
Birmingham Sunday's vocal strength perfectly suited their material, which
covered aspects of folk, psychedelia and pop."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.13" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"The A-side of Birmingham Sunday's All-American single,
"Prevalent Visionaries," is on this volume. Lyrically and musically,
the group was much more advanced than most of its competition. From a commercial
standpoint, neither this A-side or its flip ("Egocentric Solitude" on
Volume 12) had no chance. That didn't matter. Birmingham Sunday offered highly
intelligent psych-based pop that still stands up - that matters!"
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.18" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Birmingham Sunday's "Mr. Waters (The Judge)"
was recorded for their All-American album "A Message From Birmingham
Sunday" but was not released. As was usual for that label, a test pressing
was created. The later Italian release of the album had numerous problems on
this track. Other than some slight phasing in a couple spots towards the
beginning, you will find that this presentation is considerably better.
"Mr. Waters (The Judge)" proves that all the elements that made
Birmingham Sunday unique are firmly in place."
