john bergamo
Born:
28th May 1940, Englewood, New Jersey. Attended the Lenox School of Jazz, Lenox
Mass. in 1959 with fellow students such as Ornette Coleman, and Don Cherry.
During the mid-1960's he was with the Creative Associates at the State
University at Buffalo. Moving to California he became coordinator of the
percussion program at California Institute of the Arts in 1970. He taught Ed
Mann who later joined him in his group The Repercussion Unit.

john bergamo utilizes the array of odd instruments, african and asian rhythms
and textures that are the staple of modern percussionists. his work falls into
both world and new categories, and his solo percussion release on cmp has
something for every taste.

john bergamo, multi-focus percussion, received his bachelor and masters degrees
from the manhattan school of music and studied drumset at the lenox school of
jazz with max roach. he attended the furienkurse fur neue musik in darmstadt,
the ali akbar college of music and was a three-time fromm fellowship recipient
to tanglewood. john spent two years as a creative associate at suny buffalo
under a grant from the rockefeller foundation. mr. bergamo received a four month
grant to study tabla in calcutta with shankar ghosh from the american institute
of indian studies. teachers include: fred albright, paul price, joseph
giarratano, kenny dorham, mahapurush misra, shankar ghosh, alla rakha, swapan
chaudhuri, t. ranganathan, t. h. subaschchandran and t. h. viniakram, p.s.
venkateshan, huai ming wong, and most recently, carl rigoli and kai ying tung.
he has taught at the university of washington, the ali akbar college of music,
the naropa institute, and bands of america. published compositions include four
pieces for timpani, interactions, on the edge, and blanchard canyon. on the edge
is also a solo album. bill t. jones dance company used on the edge for his piece
havoc in heaven. in addition to an intense involvement with east indian music
since 1966, john has, together with members of the repercussion unit, created a
truly indigenous music with is a synergistic synthesis of music at calarts.
