"Glass Finger's Big Bad But Beautiful Book of Beefheart Bootlegs - Volume
#1" (Apocalypse) / 1993 :
"1989 double bootleg from Archive Productions ARK 002. This is
the only gatefold and features a deluxe full colour sleeve. On first sight there
looks to be extensive sleeve notes inside and on the back - but the textis
actually alngdon Winner 1970's article from Rolling Stone. "Another
Chapter", which i more or less an historical vinyl document, covers the
period from 1966 to 1973, from the Avalon Ballromm to the Reprise Outtakes. Here
are the four alternative takes of Safe As Milk cuts, including a slow dreamlike
Call On Me. Also some of the BBC recorded tracks played on John Peel's Top Gear
program in February and May / June 1968, including some 'unphased' Strictly
Personal tracks. Sides 3 / 4 are a selection of outtakes and backing tracks
including Funeral Hill #1 and Little Scratch whle Sun Zoom Spartk has a studio
tiff between Beefheart and a tired and emotional Zoot Horn Rollo. These tracks,
including an awesome Flaming Autograph, are a pure delight and in an ideal
world, which this isn't, would be issued soon in the new Warner Archives series.
The label has Los Band Magicos and the disc is warped due to a very thin
pressing, thought playable. One interesting thing about this is that is was
stocked (allegedly) by a large chain of record shops in Autumn '90 as an import!
The artwork featured on this, apart from the Rolling Stone stuff, is from the
'70s UK book on Beefheart The Lives And Times Of Captain Beefheart, although I
don't know whether it came from somewhere else originally."
