from "Glass Finger's Big Bad But Beautiful Book of Beefheart Bootlegs -
Volume #1" (Apocalypse) / 1993 :
"Best Batch Yet on God's Golfball Records Don-12981. Recorded live on January
29, 1981 at the Country Club (which is in Receda, Calif according to the
information I have - weren't the Bush Recording couple on "Trout" from
Receda?) - Remote Recording Facilities: Wally Heider Sound. US(?) bootleg with
deluxe color cover with "Clear Spot" period "Top Hat" photo
and the Van Vliet drawing that appeared on the 1977 punk compilation album Blorp
Esette Vol.1 from the Los Angeles Free Music Society on the front. Back cover
has the photo that came with the Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) press kit. Nice
blue / whit labels have God's Golfball Records in black - I think this is
reference to the label that Beefheart was going to set up in the early '70s but
didn't. This is a excellent performance by what was to be the final line-up of
the touring Magic Band. There is a splendid Kandy Korn and a Veteran's Day Poppy
executed with almost military precision. The recording is strange in that there
is hardly any audience sound at all - I guess it was recorded directly from
themixing desk and so only picks up the louder clapping from the microphones -
and so it does lack a bit of the atmospere of a live show. One amazing thing to
me about these shows is the range of albums represented by the tracks - apart
from Safe As Milk cuts (which are just missing) and Ice Cream For Crow cuts
(which hadn't been recorded yet) this has tracks from all the other periods. The
other great point of interest about this is that it is nearly the last
performance he did and as far as I know the very last to appear on vinyl. The
information I have from Colin Webb is that the last known show was at Huntingdon
Beach, Calif on January 31, 1981 - ie just two days later than this one. There
was an FM broadcast in Vancouver on Saturday February 28th 1981 but this was
recorded earlier."
