Volume #2" (Apocalypse) / 1995 :
"1995 bootleg CD The Early Years on Beef Music BF 5969 must be along
with the Live At The Radar Station one of the most sought after bootleg CDs as
few seem to have surfaced since they were initially pressed! (Possibly a very
limited edition compared to others?) The cover shot by Ed Caraeff of The Magic
Band at the house they shared in the Woodland Hills on the completion of the
Trout Mask Replica LP comes from US Rolling Stone & it's nice to see Mr.John
French not in hiding. For once they seem to get the majority of facts correct
concerning the dates & information of song titles and recordings included
herein.
Starting the CD with Don, Frank & Bobby Zappa must have been great for those
unfamiliar with Don's 1st ever recorded vocals. Now, released officially on The
Lost Episodes set. Also the lost 5th track from the Avalon Tapes showing up for
the first time along with pre-A&M days acetate Frying Pan (much faster than
the finished version). The real treat for fans was to hear the completely
unheard Korn Ring Finger (which sounded like a Mirror Man track and was somehow
missing from Sequel's I May Be Hungry But I Sure Ain't Weird CD - seven and a
half minutes of The Magic Band at their finest. Tracks 15-22 were from the Trout
Mask rehearsal tape that was thought to be lost or tucked away in either Don's
or Frank's attic! Although Henry Kaiser believes that source tape was thought
'lost' from Dick Kunc the engineer from the sessions? These raw instrumentals
give good insight to the individual members' contributions, painstakingly
transcribed by candlelight by the great Mr.John French!"
