the friendly torpedoes
= Paul Buff & Sean Bonniwell
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.2" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"After
recording the entire output of The Music Machine at Original Sound, Paul Buff
got together with Music Machine leader/vocalist (Thomas) Sean Bonniwell to do
some tracks as The Friendly Torpedoes. They released an Original Sound single
("Nothing's Too Good For My Car"/ "So Long Ago") in 1970,
but "Citizen Fear" never turned up until the Music Machine CD
"Ignition" in 2000. Actually, the backing track of "Citizen
Fear" is exactly the same as The Buff Organization B-side "Upside Down
World" from late 1967, but Bonniwell was called in to write new lyrics and
vocalize them in 1969. This is one of three mixes that were made of
"Citizen Fear," with the others following later."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.5" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Paul Buff’s master of The Friendly Torpedoes’ “Citizen Fear” is included
on this volume, and the final mono master was released on Volume 2. This
recording with former Music Machine honcho Sean Bonniwell will also appear in
another mix later in the series."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.8" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"When Paul Buff worked with (Thomas) Sean Bonniwell
after the breakup of The Music Machine, no one knew how it was going to turn
out. This series has three mixes of "Citizen Fear," but only one
single resulted from their pairing. Buff and Bonniwell were called The Friendly
Torpedoes and recorded the single "Nothing's Too Good For My Car"/
"So Long Ago" in late 1969 for release on Original Sound the next
year. Completely different than Bonniwell's garage rock style, the single
explored different aspects of Sean and Paul's abilities. The single mixes of
both sides are included on this volume. The A-side covered a guy's love for
outfitting his car, while the other side dealt with Bonniwell's
semi-autobiographical story to date."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.10" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"An
unequalized mix of The Friendly Torpedoes' "Citizen Fear" is the last
presentation of the track in this series. The vocal is a bit loud in spots, but
the collector in you wants it!"
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.18" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"We also have some brief pieces from The Friendly
Torpedoes (the introductory piece of "Nothing's Too Good For My Car"),
The Buff Organization ("Dance With The Chickens") and a fragment from
Sonny Wilson's "Fall In Love With You" session."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.19" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Both sides
of The Friendly Torpedoes single appear in stereo mixes that debut on this
release, so we're already making waves!"
