in his book "high fidelity" writer nick hornby has put  a couple of frank zappa references and also a beefheart one.

Rob Gordon has a small cd-shop in outer town.  The movie starts with someone saying something like "only those who are searching for this rare zappa vinyl, take the effort to visit this shop".  The store itself has a couple of Joe's Garage album on display and one of the customers asks for a french import of Captain Beefheart's "Safe as milk".
