elliot ingber

Elliot Ingber played lead guitar with The Mothers around 1965 - 1966, but left shortly thereafter to form the Fraternity Of Man with Richie Hayward and Martin Kibbee (who was the "Fred Martin" credited on some Little Feat songs). Fraternity Of Man had 2 lps both put out on cd by the edsel label.

Richie Hayward hooked with Lowell George and Roy Estrada (when the Mothers disbanded in '69) to form Little Feat, which is where the Feat / Ingber connection comes in. (see also the Factory).  In the mid-seventies, Elliot Ingber played for a while with Captain Beefheart as well.

Before the Mothers, Elliot Ingber had played with the Moondogs and with the Gamblers.

random notes

Elliot Ingber was in the Mothers at the time of "Freak Out" (oddly enough, in those days FZ did not consider himself good enough to be the lead guitarist in his own band!) but left shortly thereafter to form the Fraternity of Man with Richie Hayward and Martin Kibbee (who was the "Fred Martin" credited on some Little Feat songs).

The first LP had the original version of "Don't Bogart That Joint" (which became world famous when "Easy Rider" came out), as well as a version of "Oh No" before FZ would put it out himself on "Weasels Ripped My Flesh". Fraternity of Man had 2 LPs both put out on cd by the Edsel label. Other disc is called "Get It On".

Of course, Hayward hooked with Lowell George and Roy Estrada (when the Mothers disbanded in 69) to form Little Feat, which is where the Feat/Ingber connection comes in.

See the Factory page for more info on the Ingber/Lowell/Estrada/Kibbee/Hayward/Zappa connection.

Elliot's tenure with Beefheart was brief; he joined right after "Lick My Decals Off" and played most of the tour in support of the record but quit midway due to (supposedly) a distaste for life on the road. He was christened Winged Eel Fingerling and did record the next CB album "The Spotlight Kid" but didn't tour with him any further. I heard a rumor he is now a mailman.

Ingber rejoined Beefheart after the "Bongo Fury" tour - he subsequently toured with the Magic Band on the Fall - Winter 1975-76 tour. He supposedly suffered a nervous breakdown in the studio during a Magic Band recording session, though this is unconfirmed.

He was also involved with the Mallard project (2 albums) - which is the Magic band (sans captain) and with real (??) names - Both of their albums, "Mallard", and "In A Different Climate", are reissued on a single CD on the Virgin label.  (And without their permission, I might add.)

There's also some Ingber-material on "looking up grannies dress" by the Grandmothers. That's right.  And on the first Grandmothers album titled "The Grandmothers," (1980 Rhino Records) there are two songs by Elliot Ingber:
"A Bit Blue"                  "We Don't Feed No Livestock Here"
Elliot Ingber - guitar        Elliot Ingber - lead guitar
Johnny Dyre - harp            Ira Ingber - washboard
Larry Taylor - guitar         "Lil' Johnny" - guitar & vocal

[recorded in the early '70s]  Richie Hayward - drums & [recorded in 1971]

The biography on the album cover says "Elliot Ingber lives in Hollywood and keeps himself in shape by riding a 15-speed racer and drinking lots of water. He's been writing his very different blues and rock."  [note:  circa 1980]

The second Grandmothers album titled "Looking Up Granny's Dress" (1982 Rhino Records) also has a song by Elliot Ingber on it
"Gingerwail"
Elliot Ingber - lead guitar
Ira Ingber - guitar & bass
Don U. Matic - drums
[recorded in ????]

Ingber is credited on the Canned Heat album Hallelujah, guitar I believe. There is a "credit map chart" on the record and Mr. Ingber's symbol is a joint...

Does anyone know about a group called Moondogs?? They excisted a short time about 1958-59. The members: Jett Powers, Derry Weaver, Elliot Ingberg, and Marshall Lieb.
The group recorded two "local hits" called Moondog (Powers/Weaver) and Mooncat (Taylor/Weaver)
All in text of the backcover of a Jett Powers album. Later I have learnd that another name was Gamblers, with the same members??

Here's the full lineup on the Rhino CD:

VARIOUS ARTISTS:
Cowabunga! The Surf Box (R2 72418)

(snip)

2.MOON DAWG! - The Gamblers [2:15] (Derry Weaver)
DERRY WEAVER: lead guitar   ELLIOT INGBAR: rhythm guitar
BRUCE JOHNSTON: piano   LARRY TAYLOR: bass
ROD SCHAFFER: drums   NIK VENET: dog howls
Produced by NIK VENET
World Pacific single #815 (1960).

Why does the producer always get the fun parts?

I wrote the words and Elliot wrote the music on "Don't Bogart That Joint" Your history of how our group, "Fraternity of Man" was not correct.  In fact, quite a few details about Elliot were incorrect.
