Belgian bluesman Jos Steen's voice might be compared to that of Howlin' Wolf or Don Van Vliet. It fits perfectly with the raw, unpolished blues that he plays.

Weird Mix of raw Country Blues and a scala of various music-styles.
Numerous concerts in Belgium through the seventies and eighties, all by himself,
or in duo's, trio's ,or with his bands: STUPID PAINTERS, DE KOLLEKTIEVE
ZELFMOORD, the CHINA PIG BLUES BAND.
Between 1986 and 2004: no public appearances at all. With great antipathy
against the predictable speed of new technology in everyday life, he lived as a
hermit in his mansion in his own county, far from the madding crowd. There he
settled his 'Museum of Ancient Strings and Things'... a large collection of
self-made objects, books, drawings, paintings... meanwhile he compiled his old
and new recordings on 25 cd's ! (field- and houserecordings: no studio material)
The music of Jos Steen is a weird blend of wilful interpretations of early
Country Blues, improvised and composed music, invented Ethnic Music, acoustic
soundscapes... mostly performed on cracked instruments."
| December 2006, Zjakki Willems invited Jimmy Carl Black, Steven de
Bruyn and Jos Steen into the Marconi Studio of Radio One in Brussels.
The recordings of this Black Brown Stone trio were broadcast every monday
of february during Zjakki's "Cucamonga" radio show.

Jos Steen recorded Frank Zappa's 'Willie The Pimp' on his "Devil's Music" album. The same album also included his 'Song For Jimmy Carl Black'. The "Devil's Music" album is one of many private releases by Jos Steen.
The November 2008 issue of Belgian mag RifRaf included a one-page article on / interview with Jos Steen, entitled "Ik verveel me nooit" (I never get bored).
Jos Steen passed away on September 4, 2012.

"jos
steen is a remarkable outsider in the purest possible sense of the word !
telling stories about the dude always sounds like they're untrue or seriously
exaggerated, the way he lives sounds like a fairytale and the way he acts would
resemble the heaviest mix of bukkowski and bobby colombo. jos lives in a tiny
house underneath a radiotower of the national tv and radiostation
"vrt", where he works as an audio librarian, the house is built on the
highest point of the area in a forest, u can see it from miles and miles away,
it's tiny but can be called a museum! it is full of selfmade instruments and
broken piano's, amazing wooden string instruments made of garbage and all kinds
of foreign instruments noone remembers the name off.
since around 1964 jos has been making poems, stories, paintings, collages,
drawings and music/sound to kill the demons in his head or jam along to their
forceful blues! some call him "the belgian beefheart" and the people
that already forgot about beefheart talk about a local little howling
wolf.
jos always made selfreleased zines, tapes and more recently mountains of cdr's
of homemade blues, broken bottle experiments and heavy free music folk. this lp
is a selection of tracks of a recent cdr of tape and recordplayer experiments
spiced with vacummcleaners, rotting voices, undefinable strings, piano's etc..
it's absolutely unthinkable his work could be potentially lost in time and
space, for fuck's sake, the dude is a genius!!!!!!
in the past jos played with free jazz greats like peter jacquemin, andré
goudbeek, yvo van der borght, with poetry psychos like roland topor and freddy
de vree, and with zappa's own jimmy carl black who begged on his bare knees to
play with jos, well maybe thats exaggerated as well.."
