the velveteens
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.1" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"The
Velveteens were a family affair - namely, the Valenzuela family. (Mario) John
Valenzuela was the leader of this Pomona, California-based instrumental band who
backed many different artists in the early '60s. "Dog Patch Creeper"
was the A-side of their Emmy single (Paul Buff's
label) and is an excellent example of what Paul
Buff calls "the power of amateurs." Their sound could be described as
rough or crude, but they delivered their material with an irresistible charm."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.7" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Terri &
The Velveteens' "Bells Of Love" was issued by the small Kerwood label,
but it was cut at Pal Studios. This track and its flipside "You've Broken
My Heart" are very sought-after tunes from the era."
"The Velveteens' "Maria" is another unreleased track rescued from
an acetate and is a Johnny Valenzuela-led vocal tune."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.19" liner notes by Greg Russo:
""Johnny's
Jump" by The Velveteens was the B-side of their single "Dog Patch
Creeper" (Volume 1). There is a really embarrassing bad sax note during the
recording that should not have been released, so we've put together the mix
correcting that error that Emmy should have issued the first time!"
