a pen / ink / collage drawing by Frank Zappa
  • 16" x 22"
  • signed and dated 1958
  • Zappa gave this drawing to Howard H. Most

from the ebay sale:

This is an original pen/ink/collage drawing done by the pop-musical icon Frank Zappa when he was a senior at Antelope Valley High school in Lancaster, S.Calif. 1957-58. It is signed and dated by Zappa on back of poster board. My father, Howard H. Most was teaching art at that high school during that time.He had Frank Zappa in one of his classes during his senior year there. This drawing/collage was a gift from Zappa to my father. It has come to me through my fathers estate/collection. Dimensions are 16"x22". Over all condition is good. Slight water stain in lower left corner, which matting/framing would cover. The piece is unframed. Very rare early Zappa visual art work ! He , of course, was not a famous pop-music-cultural icon yet !

sold on ebay, jan 2010
"The art work was given to a lady I became friends with when I lived in Beverly Hills in the 80's [...]. She personally knew Frank when they were in community college and had parties on the beach together. [...] Water color with other mixed medium used -- i.e., colored crayons/pencils."

posted on Zappateers:
"I came across the painting listed on the online auction site, webstore. The seller included two letters that were written by the previous owners about how they came to own the painting. The earliest letter is dated 1973 and was written by a woman who claims it was painted for her when she and FZ were friends at Community College in 1963 (Suzane R.). It also mentions that Zappa called her his little devil. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that this description and “little devil” line are very similar to the info included about the watercolors on the United Mutations website.

The second letter came from a woman named Norma B., stating that she (Norma) was given the painting by her friend Suzane R, whom she befriended while working at Fred Heymans in Beverly Hills. This letter is typed on a page that also includes the xeroxed image (in color) of two envelopes from Fred Heymans postmarked 1988."

APPRAISER: It's a beautiful piece of strange art. And you said when we talked earlier that you had double-dated with Frank.

GUEST: A few.

APPRAISER: A few dates?

GUEST: Yes, yes.

APPRAISER: So you got to know him a little bit.

GUEST: Yes, I did.
