the (paul green) school of rock (music) / the (wilmington) school of rock / the paul green rock academy
July 2003 and August 2005, The Paul Green School Of Rock Music performed Frank Zappa's music at the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan, Germany. The pictures at the right show them in action at the 2005 edition, playing Zappa (with special guest Napoleon Murphy Brock) on Friday evening and a Pink Floyd set on Saturday evening. The Paul Green School of Rock also performed at the 2008 edition of the Zappanale Festival in Bad Doberan, Germany. They played a Yes set on 2008/08/16, and a Zappa set on 2008/08/15. It included a guest appearance by Denny Walley. In 2009, the School of Rock returned to the Zappanale Festival, playing a Rolling Stones set on 2009/08/12 at the Kamptheater Stage in Bad Doberan, and performing Zappa music on the main stage at the festival area on 2009/08/15. July 2014, the Wilmington School of Rock returned to Zappanale to perform at the Bad Doberan kick off party on 2014/07/17 (with special guest Denny Walley) and on the main stage, opening the actual festival on 2014/07/18. In 2016, Paul Green returned to Zappanale with students from the Paul Green Rock Academy. Quite a number of these Zappanale concerts got broadcast on the internet and were also made available in very limited quantities on DVDR by the Arf Society. |

Grand
Opera House ready to rock and roll
Special to The News Journal
Eric Svalgård bought the Paul Green's School of Rock Music franchise rights for
New Castle County.
By MAUREEN MILFORD The News Journal (Wilmington, DE)
04/15/2006
Welcome to the Grand Opera House and the Kingdom of Rrrrrock.
You heard right. In July, a School of Rock Music will open at the stately Grand
and students will be creating some musical fusion inside its 135-year-old walls.
The after-school music program, part of the Paul Green's School of Rock Music
chain, is being developed by keyboardist Eric Svalgård of Media, Pa., who
bought the franchise rights for New Castle County in February for $40,000.
Legend has it that the school's founder, Paul Green, 33, was the inspiration for
actor Jack Black's over-the-top Dewey Finn (a.k.a "Mr.S") in the 2003
movie, "School of Rock."
"I recognize Paul Green in Jack Black -- like some of his
expressions," said Matt Manser, 18, a six-year student at the Philadelphia
School of Rock. "But Paul's not that cheesy."
However, Green, described by some as "confrontational," has been known
to tell a student guitar player to go out and perform a "face-melting
solo."
"That movie was a PG version of me," Green said. "I teach by the
seat of my pants, so I never know what's going to come out."
Still, the real Paul Green's School of Rock Music is not like Hollywood's
"bubble gum" version, said Manser, who said he's not a fan of the
movie because "they stole the idea from us." Green said he started the
school in his house in 1998.
Manser, who plays guitar and has performed with classic rock icons like Peter
Frampton and Alice Cooper through the school, said the school has been an
important part of his life, introducing him to people he never would have met at
high school.
"Rock School is like a community," where students play everything from
classic rock to shred metal to punk to alternative rock, Manser said.
Svalgård said the school's marketing strategy is targeted at kids like Manser
and Eric Dicandilo, 17, of Downingtown, Pa. The guitar and bass player has been
going to the Downingtown School of Rock for two years.
Dicandilo admits he didn't know a scale or a chord when he started. Now, his
band Stevadelic is getting gigs at local bars.
And there's another benefit to rock school: "You get a lot of
groupies," Dicandilo said.
Kids are the market, but the customers are the parents who pay the bills.
Tuition is $200 a month, although there will be an introductory rate of $180 a
month until enrollment reaches 60. Students, who receive one private 45-minute
lesson a week, are exposed to the full range of rock music from rockabilly to
funk. They are also encouraged to come to the school at any time and jam, Svalgård
said.
Svalgård, 50, who is currently on a 28-city tour with Project Object, a Frank
Zappa tribute band, hooked up with the Grand after he decided to open a School
of Rock franchise in February. Besides the initial franchise fee, Svalgård will
pay 5 percent of the monthly gross revenues to the franchisor, Paul Green School
of Rock Music LLC in Philadelphia. Paul Green is president of the privately held
company.
"In exchange, we get their national marketing exposure," said Svalgård,
who attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Although Svalgård looked in suburbia for a location, the opera house was a
great fit, he said. He declined to say what his business arrangement is with the
Grand.
Kenneth A. Wesler, executive director of the Grand, who was not at the opera
house this week, did not return calls for comment.
"I'll bring a youthful excitement and vigor that maybe the Grand is missing
now," Svalgård said.
The Delaware school will be launched with a benefit concert June 24 at the
Grand. Students who are part of the Paul Green's School of Rock All-Stars will
perform a classic rock show. Proceeds will benefit Alfred I. du Pont Hospital
for Children.
Green, who has a degree in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, moved
in 2000 to space on Race Street in Philadelphia.
There are now about 14 School of Rock locations from Cherry Hill, N.J., to
Hollywood, Calif.
Billed as a performance-based music program, the idea is to give middle and high
school students a real rock experience, including a concert on a stage three
times a year. When a show is in development, there are three-hour rehearsals
every week. The first show Svalgård plans to put on is Pink Floyd's "The
Wall."
"We're putting them in a real venue with real lights and a real audience,
not just their mothers and girlfriends," Svalgård said.
But students don't get a diploma when they leave, Green said.
"They get a handshake and kick in the pants," Green said.
2008 07 29 - a couple of questions for Paul Green from The Paul Green School
Of Rock Music - http://www.schoolofrock.com/
Paul Green says: "Things are going amazingly well. We just got back from a European tour opening for and playing with the Butthole Surfers...Amsterdam, Gent, and 7 shows in the UK. It was awesome."
So I threw him some questions regarding the P.G.School Of Rock's scheduled Zappanale appearance:
UniMuta:
How does it feel, coming back to the Zappanale festival?
Paul
Green: It is our favorite show to do, so of course I am very excited! We
play most of the big festivals in the US...Lollapalooza, ACL, Summerfest...but
there is nowhere else we play that puts the kids in front of such a wonderful,
knowledgeable, and kind audience. It really is magical every time we play there.
UniMuta:
How does the Zappanale festival fit into the whole of the P.G.School of Rock?
Is it something for last-year-students only? Do the students that come along
take extra courses or rehearsals? Are they all from the same school / city?
Paul
Green: Zappanale really sits outside of our normal plans...it serves no
promotional purpose, per se, but rather is just my way of rewarding students who
have worked so hard for us. We have two allstar groups, drawn from the 11 East
Coast SORs, and I bring one of these everytime we come (this year the other
group just did the Eurpean Butthole Surfers tour...so it works out fair). I
don't just bring last year students, but I do try to make sure that everyone of
our best students makes it to Zappanale during their time in the program.
The students of the Paul Green School of Rock Music
will be performing a Zappa set on Friday, August 15, with Denny Walley.
Saturday, August 16, on midnight they will perform the music of Yes.
2008 08 01
When the Paul Green School of Rock comes to Zappanale, you don't
just get the students of the School of Rock. There are often some parent
and / or friends that come along. Tim Cooper and his wife Vanessa are a fine example. Their kids, Dave and Rosalie, both study at the School of Rock and are making the trip to Zappanale. I couldn't hesitate to ask Tim how he felt about the Zappanale adventure and about the School of Rock program. Here's Tim's response (2008 08 01): "We've
been involved with our local branch
of the Paul Green School of Rock for 4 years now, and Dave and Rosalie
have been playing with the All-Stars for the last couple of years, and
it's been a truly magical experience for all of us.
We've heard about Zappanale, and seen the documentary "Rock
School" with the All-Stars first appearance there, and have hoped to
go ever since. I've been a
fan of Frank Zappa's music for years, and one of the things that convinced
me of the worth of Paul Green's program was the reverence with which the
Zappa repertoire is treated. As
to the program, I think it's safe to say it's exceeded our wildest
expectations, and I'm sure our children's lives will never be the same. We're
very excited to come to Zappanale, both my wife Vanessa and I will be
coming along with Dave and Rosalie. Dave
plays keyboards and alto sax, and Rosalie plays bass and tenor sax, and
they both sing. We've talked
to other families who've been to Zappanale, and I think we have a fairly
good idea of what to expect, and we're sure it will live up to our
expectations. Rosalie
graduates and goes on to college this fall, so we can't imagine a better
send-off for her All-Star career. As
to my preferences, I've been a practicing musician all my life - I play
keys and guitar, and I've been playing in a blues band in the Philadelphia
area for the last 10 years or so. I
like to think my tastes are eclectic - I'm a big Zappa fan, but I enjoy
many varying artists. I've
been particularly thrilled to meet some of my heroes through this program:
Adrian Belew, Jon Anderson, and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. We're
currently on the road with the kids - they're playing at the Lollapalooza
Festival in Chicago tomorrow - I can't think of a better way to spend my
vacation than watching my kids play the music I love. |

Hello
Friends of The School of Rock! Beginning
this Saturday we are going back to our roots and bringing back Mr
Napoleon Murphy Brock...the ORIGINAL GUEST PROFESSOR. We
have had plenty of wonderful artists come in since we kicked off the
Guest Professor series way back in 2004, but none have done a better job
with the kids. Napi is a endless fountain of music, love, and
enthusiasm, and his wide smile spreads quickly among the kids. So...please
come see this show. Its awesome. And if you don't mind, feel free to
forward this along to your lists. The shows will be great, and if people
are actually there to see them then they will be awesome. I
have put the ad below, but if it doesnt show up you can check out the
