random notes
from: Jan van Kemenade
Sal has a solo release (92 ?) out called "One for Dewey". A
tribute to Miles Dewey Davis, and the music is 50s/60s -Davis like. He's also a
member of the GRP big band who released an album 1 or 2 years ago. (His solo
album is on GRP too). Like real, *real* Davis-like.
He played trumpet and did horn arrangements for Robbie Krieger's "Robbie Krieger
and Friends" (1977).
Sal was a member of the Tonight Show Band with Branford Marsalis. Got a haircut
for the gig.
From: Jock Ellis
He did the Tonight show with Jay Leno in the first two years until he had a falling out with Branford Marsalis. Sal used to have a song.. "Frank, where are my royalties ?"
From: Patrick Neve
Sal played one of the musicians in the movie "Grace Of My Heart".
From:Daniel Norris
Why did he get fired by Frank? For using drugs or something?
From: John Henley (jhenley@mail.utexas.edu)
Well, per the Feb. 1994 Musician magazine tribute: The 1972/73 Mothers were still starving. Sal went to FZ and asked for a salary increase for the band, and if that weren't possible, to at least give them a per diem so they could eat a little better. Sal says that Frank just blew up, told him he'd never worked that way and never would, "and you can just turn in your music too." Sal claimed to have been very shocked, and sounded like he was still kind of dazed by it.
