ricky dean
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.2" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"There were
many Mexican-American performers after Ritchie Valens that wanted to break into
the English-speaking market. Rick Martinez, known professionally as Ricky Dean,
was one of them. His Emmy single "Blue Tears"/ Little Girl" was
licensed to the Donna label shortly after release in August 1962. Ricky Dean
would go on to record additional tracks for Donna before turning up on the
Original Sound label in 1967 for the Paul Buff
co-written and produced single "Flowers"."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.3" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Ricky
Dean's "Blue Tears" captured many of the elements of contemporary
Bobby Vinton, but it was a completely in-house production. Ward Allen was
responsible for the string arrangement for this original Emmy release."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.7" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Ricky Dean
returned to the recording scene in late 1967 to record "Flowers" for
Original Sound. Dean and Paul Buff wrote the song, which Paul produced. Allison
Buff is the female vocalist and she turns in an excellent performance."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.8" liner notes by Greg Russo:
""I'll Never Love Another" was the other side
of Ricky Dean's "Flowers" single for Original Sound. Ricky wrote the
tune, and unusually for the record label, it was a stereo single release. Note
Allison Buff's Mamas & The Papas-styled backing vocals!"
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.9" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Ricky Dean's
"Little Betty Limbo" was written by Paul Buff and was demoed at Pal
Studios, but the final version was laid down at Radio Recorders. It was released
on Donna as the B-side of "Little Girl." But, that's not the version
that we have here. This is a version with additional instrumentation that has
never been released."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.13" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"In the more innocent part of the '60s - the pre-Beatles
period - songs like Ricky Dean's "Little Betty Limbo" reigned supreme.
We've heard an alternate version before, but here is the original single version
that was written by Paul Buff. He never received a cent for it, but that will
change!
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.14" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"When you do a recording, you have to lay down a backing
track. Paul Buff recorded two backing tracks for his version of Ritchie Valens'
"Donna." This volume has the first one, along with the first backing
track for Bobby Ray's "Encinada Way." Mono mixes for both sides of
Ricky Dean's "Flowers"/ "I'll Never Love Another" single
state their case here as well."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.16" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"The
inspired craziness of The Tired 4's "Somethin' Stupid" (in its second
mix) and Buff's first version of "Funny" is finally grounded by an
alternate stereo mix of Ricky Dean's "Flowers" and the second backing
track of Bobby Ray's "Encinada Way.""
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.19" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"A trio of
Hollywood Persuaders tracks, the album version of "Persuasion," the
stereo LP mix of "Tijuana" and the recently released
"Cruisin'" are surrounded by The Masters/Chester Martin single-tracked
version of "Come Back My Love" and the seventh version of The Buff
Organization's "Upside Down World." Cut at the same time as his
Original Sound single, Ricky Dean's "Blue Christmas Day" has never
been released until now. It was his final recording session."
