bobby ray
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.3" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Bobby Ray
was an excellent vocalist that cut a handful of tracks at Pal in 1963. Dave
Aerni was the bassist in Bobby Ray's band The Gents, with Aerni and Buff
producing Bobby's recordings. Only one single was released on Emmy in June 1964
- the 20th and last on the label - and "My Brother" was the A-side."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.4" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Bobby Ray And The
Gents’ “Make You Feel Like Livin’” was cut in 1963, but was not released
until the next year. As the flipside of “My Brother” (Volume 3), “Make You
Feel Like Livin’” holds up well today because it did not employ any of the
musical trends of the time."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.5" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Bobby Ray was very productive at Pal in 1963, but he had little to show for his
efforts. One of his unreleased tracks was “Encinada Way.” This
Spanish-styled number was cut a few times at Pal, but this is the completed
vocal version."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.5" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"One of Bobby
Ray's most powerful vocal performances was on his "Three Months," the
story of a student's freedom during summer vacation. The full studio session has
Bobby Ray saying at the beginning, "I'm finally coming to (life)!" "
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.10" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"Bobby Ray cut the track "Ella Marie" during
the same sessions as his other tracks. You're hearing it for the first time."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.14" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"When you do a recording, you have to lay down a backing
track. Paul Buff recorded two backing tracks for his version of Ritchie Valens'
"Donna." This volume has the first one, along with the first backing
track for Bobby Ray's "Encinada Way." Mono mixes for both sides of
Ricky Dean's "Flowers"/ "I'll Never Love Another" single
state their case here as well."
from the "Paul Buff presents the PAL and Original Sound studio archives,
vol.16" liner notes by Greg Russo:
"The
inspired craziness of The Tired 4's "Somethin' Stupid" (in its second
mix) and Buff's first version of "Funny" is finally grounded by an
alternate stereo mix of Ricky Dean's "Flowers" and the second backing
track of Bobby Ray's "Encinada Way.""
