random notes
i know somebody (x) who purportedly knows ruth's parents. according to x, ruth now goes by her maiden name, no longer performs, and is raising her children somewhere in the vicinity of san francisco.
from a recent interview: "a couple of years ago, when i heard that frank was ill, i called him up. for 14 years we had no contact at all. he invited me to the house and we enjoyed some really nice visits with each other. last june ('93) he called and asked if he could sample some of my stuff. i was shocked because i hadn't touched a pair of mallets since march of '77. i ended up practicing for 14 hours, which was all the time i could get together in the context of my life now. i spent four days at frank's house sampling. this was really a miracle for me - that i could be reunited with him and still have something to offer."
appeared on the bbc late show fz special, interview only. be nice to think she still played, though i doubt it.

ruth underwood is alive and well, living in studio city, california, which is in
the san fernando valley (inspiration for "valley girl"). she has a son
and daughter. i was her daughter's coach two years ago on a t-ball team. ruth, i
believe, is divorced from a bass player with the hollywood bowl orchestra. i
believe he is the father of both children. i don't think ruth does any recording
anymore. she does help out with musical presentations at the school my son and
her children attend.
ruth is a wonderful person, a real joy to be around. i embarrased her one day
during the baseball season when i realized who she was, and told her she was my
hero back in the early 70s when i was playing in bands and i would try to copy
her percussion licks on my keyboards. (strange world: my guitar player in that
band was rob fetters, who went on to play with adrian belew in the bears,
raisins, etc.)

in regard to ruth underwood. i live in st. louis and there is a local musician
who played for the london symphony orchestra in the 70s. in his travels he
befriended the underwoods. according to him ruth underwood is recently employed
by the new york metropolitan opera.

dear mr. duke,
i believe it is well known that you recorded several times under the name
dawilli gonga. is it true, as i read elsewhere, that you also used the name
"amanda b. reconwith"?
warmest regards,

yes, due to certain contractual obligations, i couldn't use my real
name as a sideman for several years. however, amanda b. recondwith was not me.
it was in fact ruth underwood, who used to play marimbas & perc in frank
zappas band. we simply slowed the tape down until we arrived at the proper
timbre.
