POJAMA PEOPLE FEATURING IKE WILLIS

I'm bit too late with this, but the good news is that Glenn Leonard (the Artist Formerly Known as Project/Object's Drummer) has started a new Zappa project.

Pojama People featuring Ike Willis
performing the music of Frank Zappa

  • 2006/08/22 concert 'The Rainbow', Seattle, WA, usa
  • 2006/08/23 concert 'Dante's', Portland, OR, usa
  • 2006/08/24 concert 'WOW Hall', Eugene, OR, usa

YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON BOOTZ ANYMORE

I've told you about Dieter Jakob's book on Zappa bootlegs. Here's an update:

You can’t do that on bootz anymore – Volume 1: The vinyl

I am going to write a (picture-)book about Zappa vinyl bootlegs and try to get together all photos of the bootlegs I know. As far as I know only the photos of the below mentioned bootlegs are still missing for my book.

List of vinyl bootlegs (photos wanted):

  • At Lorely (2LP GREY+WHITE Vinyl Coloured Cover)
  • Charlie's Favourite (2LP Testpressing)
  • Christmas in New York in '76 (LP) **
  • Dortmund 1984 (LP Green Vinyl)
  • Frankie Meets Bobby [only one side is Zappa] (LP Clear Vinyl)
  • Frankie Meets Bobby [only one side is Zappa] (LP Green Vinyl)
  • From the Vaults to the Biggest Halls Volume 1 (LP) **
  • Leatherette (2LP B/W Comic Deluxe Cover RED Vinyl)
  • Metal Man Has Hornet's Wings (LP BLACK Vinyl BW SCRAPMETAL INSERT) Slipped Disc Records Label
  • S' n M (LP) **
  • Saarbrücken '78 (2LP BLACK VINYL) NOT Fooeee (Beat The Boot Box) Version
  • Saarbrücken '78 (2LP BLACK/BLUE VINYL)
  • Saarbrücken '78 (2LP YELLOW VINYL)
  • The Best of ... Pappa Zappa & Any Way the Wind Blows (2LP ) **
  • Zappaskance (2LP) **

The discs marked with ** are only known by name from various more or less reliable sources. I’m quite sure that they are not existing and results of misinterpreted labels or just homemade fakes of “serious” bootlegs. Anyway, if somebody should know something about these discs, I’d appreciate a lot to get the information. Anyway, I’d be happy if anybody from the huge Zappa fan community could help me to get a photo or a scan of all these missing boots.

Music is the best!

Dieter

So here's the deal, if you have any of these bootlegs, and if you're able to take a digital picture of it, let me know at bignOte@yucom.be and I will forward you Dieter's e-mail address.

    • The title says it all. "Zappa! Alles über Frank" is a recording of Daniel Rohr's performance with the same name.
      It's Zappa performed in German.

I saw this performance in Zappanale and I was impressed by both Daniel Rohr and by his backing band (that features Frank Goos!)

Below are the covers of Cosmik Debris number 9, and from Totally Zapped numbers 10 until 12.
They're from the same series, just changed name with number 10.
I don't have these myself, so I plucked them from the internet.

Cosmik Debris / Totally Zapped was the first fanzine that was published by Rob Cerreta. Later Rob also did Mother People.

MORE NEWS ON THE FREAK OUT BOX

Here's a message from Gail, taken from the forum at zappa dot com:

"Yes, there is a certain manifestation of Freak Out! but there are 3 other discs - approximately 3 hours of alternate tracks from the sessions for the most part, some crazy surprises, and a little bit of FZ talking about. There are a few FZ edits here and there. You will enjoy the disc/overy I am sure, almost as much a s we did. And then there is the packaging which we are also very excited about. This is truly one for the fervent and devout...it is good to know that some of what I say makes sense to some of the people who read it. So just so you heard it from me, there is nothing on the discs, 3 of which are about an hour of mostly (MOSTLY!) UNRELEASED materials, that is me talking for 30 minutes - why would I do such a thing to you or to FZ!!!! But we do have him in his own words too. And yes, it is all about Freak Out! What more do I really have to say."

ZAPPA EVENT IN MONTREUX

== newsflash from the radiodupree blog ==

A special event of Zappa music will happen in Montreux on September 1st. It's the composer/arranger Ali N. Askin (of Ensemble Modern fame) who has gathered a band to perform some of Frank's music. The band includes special guests keyboardist Mats Öberg and drummer Morgan Ågren. Mats tells that the band will perform Revised Music For Guitar And Low Budget Orchestra, Village Of The Sun, Echidna's Arf (Of You) and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?, plus stuff from Zappa In New York.
Gustaf Hielm, former member of Meshuggah will play the bass.

The event includes music by Zappa and Varèse, including some arrangements and transcriptions of Zappa's music by Ali N. Askin.

In the early 1990's Askin was Zappa's assistant for the project The Yellow Shark with Ensemble Modern.

FZLE

  • frank zappa live event: s/t
        (2006, cdr-promo, denmark, private release)
    • FZLE, or the Frank Zappa Live Event, released a promotional CDR earlier this year. The seven tracks were recorded live in concert, 2005/12/22, at the 'Pumpehuset' in Copenhagen, Denmark. A very fine selection of songs, performed by a band that's in great shape.
Those of you who saw the FZLE concert at Zappanale know what I'm talking about: this is a band that you should try to see (or hear). It's fun.
Their Zappanale concert is up at the Zappateers site, so grab it while you can.

Can't wait to hear them on the next Zappanale box !!

EASY MEAT

  • easy meat: new facts in the strange case of...
        (1995, cd, nl, van records 74321 264562)
    • There's a band in The Netherlands that is (or was) called Easy Meat, and this band performed the music of Frank Zappa.
And then there's this other Dutch band that's called Easy Meat. This one is from The Hague and does not play Zappa's music, but plays some (nice) straigh-forward rock music. No direct link to Zappa, but nice-sounding rock (a bit like Lenny Kravitz).

Well, they ARE called Easy Meat...

INVENTIONS

In 1971 (!!) Piet Davelaar started "Inventions", a Frank Zappa & Mothers fanzine published by the Frank Zappa Society.

To my knowledge, "Inventions" was the first Zappa fanzine. The first issues were published about 35 years ago.
As you can see, I tried to add a table of contents which should give you an idea of what it was all about: newsflashes, new releases, and a lot of info on the artists that belonged to the Zappa Family.

A true piece of history...
Thanks to Piet Davelaar.

DON VAN VLIET

Here's some more paperwork. Both of these magazines are very impressive (and big and heavy) art magazines, carrying an article on Don Van Vliet.
  • conjunction no.3
        (1982, usa, conjunctions)
    • Issue number three of Conjunctions magazine featured a Don Van Vliet painting on the cover and included a couple of drawings and fourpoems:
      • hollow smoke
      • popplin' gas hearts
      • the smith that cleans our stars
      • dopedinstunnedmirages

  • kunstforum no.112
        (1991/04, germany)
    • April 1991, Kunstforum published the first part of its "Outside USA" special. It featured a 8-page article with lots of pictures of paintings on Don Van Vliet:

"Don Van Vliet: Das Organlose Leben", Paolo Bianchi & Robert Fleck.

SOFT MACHINE

Seeing Soft Machine at Zappanale was one of the absolute highlights of the festival. The result is that I have been listening to a lot of SM lately...

And as Danny Mathys says: "You can't go wrong with their first albums".
So I added pictures and info for the first batch of Soft Machine albums...

ALTERNATIVE TV

  • alternative tv: in control
        (2006, cd, usa, anarchy music)
    • I already knew Alternative TV's version of Zappa's 'Why Don't You Do Me Right?', but this new album also includes their version of 'Plastic People'.

R.S.MOORE

  • r.stevie moore: platformat
        (2005, cd, usa, private release)
    • R.Stevie Moore's "Platformat" is another excellent album.
Again R.Stevie Moore displays his excellent musicianship. Personally, I think his excellent coverversions will turn you into a R.S.Moore fan immediately.
10 CC's 'Headline Hustler', Roxy Music's 'Do The Strand' and the very bluesy 'Diddy Wah Diddy' are just great. Supertramp's 'Hide In Your Shell' is maybe even better.
"Platformat" is something that I would like my favourite radio station to sound like: a mix of different styles, nice contrasts mixed with familiar tunes.

      I like it.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA

  • dweezil zappa: go with what you know
(2006, cd, usa, zappa records zr 20003)
    • The latest Dweezil album is called "Go With What You Know" and it's quite different from his previous escapades. For my ears, there's a couple of tracks that the album could have done without ('Noitpure', CC$, maybe even Preludumus Maximus) . The rest, however, is rather impressive. 'Love Ride' is a great opener and 'Fighty Bitey' has some very catchy and funny guitar riffs.
'All Roads Lead To Inca' is what the title suggests: a guitar solo over the Inca Roads vamp. Nice. Very nice.
'Peaches En Regalia' actually is the original version with Dweezil on extra synth guitar. The track is great, of course. I don't think that Dweezil adds a lot to the track, but from a technical point, it's rather impressive (and quite interesting) what he does.
Freaks need to know that Scott Thunes and Terry Bozzio are featured on one track, the Zappa Plays Zappa band on another track, and of course the Zappa band on 'Peaches'.

VPRO PICNIC - SCHISCHGEBAB - WINO MAN

"VPRO PIKNIK" is one of the oldest Zappa bootlegs around. It's also known as "Schischgebab" or "Wino Man".

The cover of the first pressing was a blank white sleeve consisting of two pieces of cardboard folded into a hexagon and rivited together. Reissus were available in regular square covers.

COLOURED VINYL ZAPPA BOOTLEG

The Pink Floyd Meets Frank Zappa vinyl bootleg has also been spotted in a 'peach coloured vinyl' version.

BELEW POWER TRIO!!!! tomorrow in Philadelphia...don't miss it...also IKE WILLIS Live..in OREGON!!

hey everyone...

FIRST OFF - Since so many people keep asking -- a few things about ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA:

1-yes we know about it, we in fact PLUGGED it from stage all during the spring PO tour

2-I, and the band, still say - SUPPORT ALL ZAPPA RELATED ACTIVITIES.

3-yes there will be another one, this fall, with a similar lineup to the other tours so far

4-yes GAIL ZAPPA hates us with a passion - just as she hates most or all of the Zappa-repertoire bands planet-wide. She has spent a small fortune trying to sue us since, oh, 1995 or so..and NEVER has she gotten a fcuking DIME ooutt ame..though I have had to spend a grand or so on P/O's lawyer. ONE gig was cancelled as a result of her insane anti-zappa activities.

5-Gail dislikes, or seems to be disliked by - the VAST MAJORITY of Zappa-alumni. Just take a look at how many more she will get on this tour. Where are the MAJOR players..the MOTHERS.. Ike Willis...The Fowlers... the 1988 band guys......?????

There are a handful of fantastic people she still talks to - but she will just as quickly dismiss them..for playing with little old project/object, as she has done to certain fine alumni. Also-thanks - we KNOW she has 'copywritten' the name 'project/object' - it doesn't affect us and is a typical waste of her money. Even if it did, we'd carry on under a different name 'cos FRANK -on his deathbed-asked all fans to PLAY HIS MUSIC. OK - i am feeling sick - enough of this and hope that answers a couple dozen emails in one swell foop.

OK _ ADRIAN BELEW NEWS!!

well- many of you are seeing this BELEW incredible tour -- if not -- make plans and GO!. Adrian's rare solo tours are a thing of wonder, always have been. But his current lineup -- man oh man can you saw nukular energy??? Yep - I admit it - i'm TOTALLY biased, his rhythm section is made of of good friends - THE SLICKS from Philly. many of you were regaled with ERIC SLICK on the spring 2006 Project Object Tour. Well- he and sister Julie Slick (bass) are now driving the BELEW POWER TRIO. The show early this week in NYC was a-m-a-z-i-n-g to say the least.. (and YES, to answer a couple of you -- they ARE related to GRACE, she is their 2nd cousin by marriage. So- bring them Airplane boots to pass along to me. BTW -- speaking of Airplane-Project/Object continuity --- Airplane's vocalist for a decade or so is DIANA MANGANO -- cousin of ROBBIE "SEAHAG" MANGANO!!)

ANDRE' CHOLMONDELEY NEWS

OH - BTW --Below we have my typically self-aggrandizing photo of the day -- about a month ago I was lucky enough to jam a bit with a major hero -= Mr Adrian Belew hisself - onstage July 16 , Bad Doberan Germany - one of my FAVORITE little towns anywhere. So tranquil... air so incredible coming off the Baltic..mmmmm. Right here we were jamming the solo vamp from Zappa's "Packard Goose", earlier we did "Muffin Man" and i blew the easiest words in the universe since i never sing the damn song. Oh well - all Pilsner-inspired fun. having seen Adrian live since Feb 1982 (King Crimson, Rutgers University) when i was about 17... then many MANY solo tours, also - a fave Adrian show-with one of my top 5 artists DAVID BOWIE when Ade toured with DB's greatest hits band in 1990 (amazing tour!! when will the dame release that stuff!!) So - this was a very cool, wacky honor and i thank the mad genius PAUL GREEN for dragging me up there as utility guitarist/bassist and to generally make a fool of myself.

And -- LET ME PLUG MY OWN MUSIC ... - wow-- from the last email I actually had a couple people order my CD - thanks!! So-- if you are into the weirder side of things -- check it out , give alisten and you can buy one track, 6 tracks or the whole damn CD, digitally or 'actual'.

It's mostly solo weirdness, done on a VS 880, a laptop , one track of my band HIDDEN AGENDA live in NYC and one track recorded live by engineer Frank Bellina in Philly as part of a Don Preston concert in sep2005 when i had a featured moment. Check it out!

And SCROLL DOWN for even more news --- the DON PRESTON akashic tour is coming soon. I wish you could xeck it out.....

BELEW...PRESTON...KENEALLY news.......Zappa Alumni on the Loose !......and ZAPPA 'freak out' reissue + CANDY ZAPPA CORRECTION

Hey y'all. Hope you are well. Oh boy - as I start to write this.....Here we go again -- Red Alert..whew...the cable news is filled with the madness. Humans. What a mess. What a bunch of crazy monkeys we turned out to be. Watch that movie Space Odyssey: 2001 again.

Meanwhile - in the only dimension that seems to consistently make sense to me -the SONIC DIMENSION, we have some news. All of it Zappa related in one way or another. Thanks for signing up on our email list. Please let me know if you're getting duplicates. ALSO -- anyone with PRESS CONTACTS - please drop me a line!

CANDY ZAPPA NEWS

Oops -- I mis-interpreted the info on the ZAPPA SINGS ZAPPA page -- and told y'all that CANDY ZAPPA will be at those upcoming shows. She IS part of the overall project - BUT WILL NOT BE ON THE AUGUST 2006 shows.

In fact - on vocals will be Napoleon Murphy Brock and John Tobacco - one show each. Nigey Lennon clarifies all in this letter:

their site http://www.myspace.com/zappasingszappa

"Hi Andre --

"Sorry for the confusion. The site was actually designed by a fan in Belgium, and it is in need of some reorganizing which I haven't had time for so far.

Candy is definitely part of the Zappa Sings Zappa project. We hope to tour this fall. In the meanwhile, I thought it would be good to list Ed's gigs, since John appears with him, and Ed's band and L/T/Z share musicians: it's the same basic band, playing the same basic material as arranged by Ed. Future gig listings will be clear as to whether Candy is appearing.....AGAIN --- Candy won't be singing at either of these two shows. John Tabacco will be handling the vox at Hecksher Park, and Napoleon at Detroit.

Thanks for your help!

--Nigey"

Folks, i'll be blunt. Last time we were booked at this place (THE MONKEY) in NYC, we had to cancel due to poor pre-sales. Sadly, i was fielding emails for days after the event explaining this to disappointed fans...SO--if you want to catch the NYC show on sun sep 17 - PLEASE PLEASE go now and get tickets. It is an audiophile, high-end listening environment -- only about 40 seats, and rigged for 5.1 surround sound! It's on the 12th floor of a midtown office building..... Click on the Monkey site for more ticket info. Pre-sales will guarantee this show goes on...

ADRIAN BELEW & JERRY OUTLAW AND FRIENDS

Jerry Outlaw says:

Please remind everyone that Adrian Belew is at the State theater on Friday night.   "Jerry Outlaw and friends" is opening the show and it's gonna be a great night of very cool music that rarely gets seen or heard live.   Adrian doesn't tour that much at all without King Crimson so this is a very special performance for this area.

I am personally asking ALL Bogus Pomp fans to please come out and support this event.

Friday night, August 18th at the State Theater  687 Central Ave.
Tickets are $20, doors open at 8pm, showtime is 9pm.

LEX L. BRONKOWITZ

Unfortunately, not many people know what Lex L. Bronkowitz can do with Zappa's music. Both "The Dangling Kitchen Session" and "Lex L. Bronkowitz Orchestra Plays FZ" are absolute highlights.

If you get the opportunity to buy one of his demos / albums, don't hesitate.

This guy needs a record-deal.

PINK FLOYD MEETS FRANK ZAPPA

Here's another Pink Floyd / Zappa bootleg with the Amougies recordings:

The album has been released on regular black and on yellow vinyl.

ROCK MUSIC MEMORABILIA

Last month, I told you that the people at Rock Music Memorabilia discovered a bunch of rare Zappa concert recordings that they will be including in their Zappa memorabilia set.

The Bath and Knebworth Frank Zappa Commemorative Set includes

  • Programmes, flyers and the tickets from

    • 1970 Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music

    • 1978  Frank Zappa Knebworth festival

  • An original 1978 Frank Zappa Knebworth pass, with a letter of authenticity (which normally sells for £15)

  • 12 photos of the 1978 Knebworth festival

  • 330 page book on the behind the scenes hassles of promoting the Knebworth festival and also working as Frank Zappa's European representative in the seventies, including his ill-fated 1971 tour.

  • And 6 CDRs. Plus a DVDR.

The following discs are examples of the recordings that were included with the box set. These recordings are audience recordings (recorded by someone in the audience), so the quality of the recording is not the strongest point, but nevertheless, these recordings give a nice impression of the performances.

"The Spirit Of Knebworth" gives an impression of what the festival must have been like; the disc presents 50 minutes of the various editions of the Knebworth festivals between 1974 - 1979, featuring The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and Genesis.

DOOT! 2006 08 05

DOOT! and their triumphant return...

...from the land of the "beer people". The dirty little secret of central Europe is that everyone makes decent beer, some of it excellent, but they will all begrudgingly admit that Belgium makes the good stuff. We had some amazing beer. Belgian ales were among the best. The Corsendonk in Turnhout was, in some ways, THE best.
The Westmalle Tripple that we enjoyed in Amsterdam was a close second. OK, maybe tied. The Lubzer Pils at Zappanale was OK, but by Sunday night it was leaking out of our pores. Luckily there is some great schwarzbier available in Bad Doberan to flush out the Lubzer.
Maybe some Leffe Blond would have been better?

We had a warm up gig at the Flora Theatre in Delft, NL. Our hosts were Reinier Parengkuan and Derk Groen from Cucurullo Brillo Brullo.
Aside from making sure that we didn't accidentally enroll at TU Delft (a real possibility), they showed us around and made sure that we didn't get too out of hand while watching the cup final. Italy won.
We had some great local asian food. Much beer was consumed. That is all you need to know. Delft is a really nice place to visit. Oh yeah... good beer. Amsterdam, they have bigger canals, more art museums, and the bong hits are plentiful. But Delft is a very cool place indeed.

See pics here: http://chollyhoss.com/doot/pics/doot-z17/
There are Delft pics, Amsterdam pics, and Zappanale Pics.

Zappanale is like what everyone wants their high school reunion to be. Lots of very cool folks who share your interests, soaking themselves in beer and not starting fights or bragging about their kids. Nirvana, to be short. The first artist of the festival was Corrie van Binsbergen. Haven't heard of her? Your loss, punk.
http://www.corrievanbinsbergen.com/ gets you to her site
and
http://chollyhoss.com/doot/pics/corrie-z17/
gets you some of Pete Brunelli's pics of her performance. Somehow an amazing guitar virtuoso performing a homage to FZ got stuck with a 30 minute set to start the first day of the festival. This was not what she deserved, in the opinion of DOOT! If you are in that sphere of downloading from Zappateers via bittorrent, they have the set available. Otherwise find a way to grab some of her music from the website. The CD "Corrie en de Grote Brokken" is highly recommended. We got a chance to hear it and DOOT! recommends it as well.

See the Zappanale website for more info on the Z17 acts.
Highlights? Everyone was really good. Check them out. Maybe check out Pikantik and Zappatistas if you want a shortcut.

Our set commenced at 10:30 in the A freakin' M on Sunday, the last day of the festival. As usual we had a few technical glitches before the soundcheck could start, then we got off to a balky start. A rubber chicken detuned Pete's bass. Really. But we got that fixed after Chunga's Revenge and the rest of the set went fine. We will have the Zappanale set available from the DOOT! websitein the near future. Until then, the aforementioned Zappateers have a very nice audience tape available. http://www.zappateers.com/

Pics from our set and the Finale with Adrian Belew:
http://www.chollyhoss.com/doot/pics/doot-stage-z17/

More pics than you can shake a stick at! And some of them are kinda
funny.

Speaking of the Zappateers: DOOT! owes them a beer or something because they turned out to see the Sunday "hangover set" and made it a really fun gig, instead of a re-enactment of Spinal Tap's "Jazz Odessy". At least we didn't place second to the puppet show! Have you hugged a Zappateer today?

A brief rundown of the highlights of our trip:

- Playing at the Flora Theatre in Delft
- Amsterdam, with forced marching, devil weed, great beer, and awesome indonesian food
- watching the World Cup final in Europe with Reinier/Derk
- Indonesian food with Reinier in Delft (awesome mackerel)
- The "Jim Jones" experience at the Towerland Hotel in Steinfeld, Germany
- Hugh Hopper using Pete's camera to photograph local "talent"
- Seeing the "Slick Kids" kick ass as Adrian Belew's sidemen, side-people
- Surreal conversation with Ken Latchney
- The hospitality of Thomas and Anna Dippel
- The hospitality of Peter and Inge van Laarhoven and their lovely kids

This is where it gets sad. After the Zappanale Andre pulled me (Pete) aside and introduced me to Adrian Belew's engineer, Ken Latchney. He is also known as Kengineer. We all had this very "roller-coaster-ish" chat about cooking for a living (something that Ken and I have done), why cooks drink heavily, the workings of the superheterodyne radio receiver, FAA safety regs, and microphone selection. It was an amazing experience for us, maybe a relaxing chat with some fellow Americans for Ken. 10 days later the news was out that Ken had died. Ken was a singularity. You knew that he loved what he did for a living, even though the unpredictability was rough. Ken did what he loved and did it with peoplem and music that he loved.

DOOT! would like to extend their deepest sympathies to Ken Latchney's family, the Belews, Robert Fripp, The Bears, and the many others that he touched in his life. For more information you can visit
http://www.adrianbelew.net/
and we suggest that you do.

Keep checking in at the DOOT! website,

Stephen, Pete, Andre, and Nate
(Nate didn't make the trip, but he was there in our thoughts when we were sober/awake enough)

THE ED PALERMO BIG BAND

  • the ed palermo big band: take your clothes off when you dance
        (2006, cd, usa, cuneiform records)
    • Ed Palermo's Big Band started performing Zappa's music some twelve years ago. A couple of years after that, in 1997, "The Ed Palermo Big Band Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa" got released, an album that many Zappa fans consider an essential part of their music collection.
And now there's "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance". On Cuneiform.
The album opens with 'RDNZL', a track that we all know from "Sleep Dirt" ("Lather"), but that The Mothers already performed in 1973! Palermo's arrangement sounds great. 'RDNZL' asks for dynamics and that's exactly what you get.  Solos by Palermo, Gordon, Quaranta, Kooshian and Marchica.  And let's not forget Paul Adamy on pumping bass!
Next up is 'Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance', another Mothers classic that Zappa himself released in a couple of different versions. Arranged by Ed Palermo and Jose Madera, we get a superb afro-latin version. I immediately dived into the booklet to see if there was a connection with (NY based) Bobby Sanabria. Anyway, this is great stuff. 'Take Your Clothes Off' is turned around and inside out at the same time. Solos by Fiedler and Kono.
'Dwarf Nebula Processional March & Dwarf Nebula' (from "Weasels Ripped My Flesh") starts very modest but launches Cliff Lyons in a very powerful solo.
The album continues with 'Pound For A Brown On The Bus', another Zappa composition that goes back to the early Mothers Days. The piece is known for having a lot of room for jams and improvisations and we get great solos by Marchica, Palermo, Kooshian and Straub.
'Sleep Dirt' could well be my favourite track on this disc. Tip to the hat for Phil Chester: a beautiful tone and a very melodic solo against a very open-sounding band. I love it.
The 'Gumbo Variations' gets another fine arrangement. Palermo uses every instrument in his Big Band. It also has a great solo by guest Dave Riekenberg on tenor sax and by Carl Restivo on guitar. Playing a guitar solo in a Zappa composition never is an easy task, but I really like what Carl Restivo does. He stays close to the melody and makes the overall sound very bluesy. Nice. Very nice.

'Mom And Dad / Oh No' is next. This is the only track that has vocals, and Carl Restivo makes it sound great. Again, the song displays the rich palette of sounds that the Ed Palermo Big Band knows to produce. The solo in the 'Oh No' part is by Ed Palermo.
The album ends with 'Moggio'. This is nother one of my favourites, not in the least because of the great solos by Kooshian, Quaranta and Marchica.

"Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" is one of these albums that will stay in your CD-player for a long while. It's great.

Highly recommended.

CANADIAN PRINT MEDIA REVIEWS

"Rare are the musicians who can even play Zappa's music, let alone make it live and breathe. So Thank the Lord for the Grande Mothers. The people who loved their music last year ranged in age from 16 to 60, and it's safe to say that a fine time was had by all."
Dugg Simpson, Artistic Director for the Vancouver Folk Festival

"These days Roy Estrada, along with Don Preston, and Napoleon Murphy Brock from Zappa's mid to late 70's Mothers, are touring the world as the Grande Mothers and keeping Zappa's music alive. They were here at the Folk Festival last year and due to public demand are returning.
Believe me, if you ever dug Zappa you don't want to miss these guys. They're fun and fuuuuunnnny. They're wicked musicians and they blew a few minds last summer there on Jericho Beach..."
NERVE MAGAZINE

"the quintet known as the Grande Mothers served up vintage psychedelia - rock songs with surreal lyrics, jazz-like harmonies and melodic complexity, with flashes of wacky satire on a par with Monty Python's Flying Circus."
THE GLOBE AND MAIL

"Fans of Frank Zappa are going to freak out for the Grande Mothers. Zappa and his band were creating a mixture of acid rock, psychedelia, doo-wop, avant-garde, tape experiments, funk and jazz. With three different Zappa eras represented, the Grande Mothers have a wide palette of material to choose from."

VANCOUVER FOLKS FESTIVAL

I was at the Ottawa show last night. Don, Napoleon and Roy were signing albums for people before the show. The show itself was one of the most incredible things I've witnessed. Unfortunately we didn't get Peaches or Slime (but Montana was played) but what impressed me was how much of WOIIFTM was played. We got Lonely Little Girl (which was greatly extended from the album version), Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance, What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body? and The Idiot Bastard Son. We also got a lot of material from One Size Fits All, the highlights being excellent versions of Poegen and Sofa. A real highlight was Village of the Sun which was played like on the Roxy album. Napoleon mentioned the Helsinki live show at one point; "If anyone shouts out anymore requests it's gonna cost you 20 marcs!" Roy even did a very brief aria. He started by teasing us with little 10 second bits and saying "That's all you get" before giving in and singing a bit of Baby Snakes. The signing session after the show was great as well. Roy Estrada was especially nice to me. Near the end of the show two young women got up on the stage to dance. I joked around with Napoleon about his reputation as a lady's man, reminding him of about his great line from the Pisspot the rabbit interview, "If you shake your booty, anything is possible." He chuckled and grinned sheepishly. I said thank-you so much for coming to Ottawa and giving such an excellent show and he promised the Grande Mothers would come to Canada again."

"Just got back from the show, suffice to say it was amazing!!!! I enjoyed it more than ZPZ, the vibe was just so much more a zappa show, (despite only having five band members.) The guitar solos were monstrously beautiful, and the drumming was interstellar! Nappy!!!! dear god that was impressive!!!! and Roy, hey, I thought he didn't play bass good since he was a mexican!!! he's better than he was on FZ:OZ even, trust me!!! and Don's solo on Trouble Every Day was unbelievably perfect. PLUS!!! they didn't shy away from the political comments, which, ZPZ playing Trouble Every Day without making it fit the modern time was ridiculous. All in all, it was amazing!!!"

"I too was at this concert, it was INCREDIBLE! Seriously, I thought ZPZ was great and all, but this just blew my mind (I was at a lack of words during the intermission). One thing I really appreciated was that these Mothers really went out there and experimented onstage, in true Zappa fashion.  A personal pick of the evening was their rendition of Twenty Small Cigars, a choice I was not expecting. They played with so much soul, so much love, it was incredible. Napoleon's sax playing during this number was heart wrenching. Beautiful. One of the best non-musical moments of the night was when they talked about Zappa's legacy, and then lead the audience in a round of applause for Frank himself. All in all, a great show. I can't help but wonder when the next Zappa-themed show will come around here. I hope that the Grande Mothers (or as they really should be called, as pointed out by the announcer at the concert, The Mothers of Invention) come back soon, I'd go to another concert without hesitation. I could go on for another 25 pages, I hardly even scratched the surface of all my feelings about the show. But I'll tastefully stop now."

"It definitely was the other side of the coin, and makes me feel like i had a full Zappa experience this summer. I wish someone else would post the setlist, cause I am going to mess up the order.... but they opened with Help I'm a rock, with all members, except the guitarist, contributing familiar vocal noises to the building cacophony until it sequed into, Florentine Pogen???? I think? see I'm going to mess this up. But then they went into Big Swifty, which was chaotic and delightful, the jam I mean. roy immediately started singing I come from nowhere, it devolved into Don's solo rendition of Evelyn a Modified dog, then boosted up into some Call Any Vegetable teases, then back into the theme. I believe during this medley was where they played Black Napkins. I know it's a forbidden song, but the guitarist nailed it, his solo was amazing and georgeous, judging from the smiles on the audiences faces during this number, how could playing it be bad? This band is awesome.

Their guitarists solos were sooo great, short, but technically awe inspiring, and INTERESTING!!! which sadly, dweez's solos are not. They then played Twenty Small Cigars, (nappy "when I think about Bill Clinton, I start to really like that title!" hahhah) which was a highlight. Nappy was playing the theme, and then going off and out into his magic solo land. not enough solo nappy time either, actually, noone got enough time, the concert was too short dagnammit! once the live Zappa starts flowing I'm insatiable! I need more!

Roy's bass playing was uberstellar as well, he's more amazing than any live documents from  Frank's bands proves, which I suppose means he's improved over the years. Talking to Don before the show, (wow, uncle meat!!!! eating pie at the table next to me!) he was saying how once Roy got on board with the Grande Mothers, that's when it all clicked, that his bass playing, taught specifically by zappa, (he used the example how instead of getting the bass to play the tonic, he'd write a major seventh) brought the band together. other song's played were Oh no, into Trouble everyday, which don sang, and made about bush. yes, they didn't shy away from making trouble ABOUT something. Don's solo in trouble was amazing. sadly there was so little soloing from him, this was his only monster of the night. they played Echidnas, which admittedly was not as good as ZPZ's version, but they did play the beginning of Don't you Ever wash that thing, which I REALLY appreciated. now here are some things I never would have expected. they played Debra Kedabra!!! a total favorite of mine! I couldn't believe it! with the drummer doing his best don van. I couldn't contain myself!!!! and into Carolina hard core ecstacy! OW!!! oh ya, somewhere in there let's make the water turn black, Idiot Bastard son (napoleon's voice on this just took the cake, took the mothafuckin cake! ) and Harry You're a beast!! there was also a slow doowoppy song, but I forget which one.(The Air)
Watermelon was also played right near the end, brilliantly. and the show ended with a final encore of mother people, how fitting!!!! I know I'm missing stuff, but I'll come back and try to piece it together better, any help people!!!!!!! Great show, go see em!!! it's worth it!"

"Now for some of my favourite numbers played that night. The first mind-blower of the evening was Big Swifty. They played the opening effortlessly before delving into unknown territories. Roy singing I Come From Nowhere, a hilarious midsong version of Evelyn, A Modified Dog... it was nuts! A personal pick of the evening was their rendition of Twenty Small Cigars, a choice I was not expecting. They played with so much soul, so much love, it was incredible. Napolean's sax playing during this number was heartwrenching. Beautiful. One of the best non-musical moments of the night was when they talked about Zappa's legacy, and then lead the audience in a round of applause for Frank himself. They played Debra Kadabra, which was an obscure choice. Chris Garcia handled the vox, and did a fantastic job of a song that is very hard to do well (The Captain is very hard to imitate). Very rocking performance. I'd say my favourite performance of the night was Trouble Every Day, sung by Don, adding in current political commentary. Roy and Nappy added in many asides which made me laugh out loud. The song was played with unbridled fury, which left me completely amazed."

THE UM ARCHIVES

Those of you who visit these pages on a more regular basis, will probably know that UM is mostly about "news", and about archives. Every once in a while, I try to add some really old stuff to the archives.  It's fun and I like the visual thing.
If you have zappa / beefheart or residents related material of which you think that it should be archived on this site, send the info (& pictures) to bignOte@yucom.be.

Below, you can find info & pictures on the ten issues of Hot Raz Times that Urban Gwerder put out between 1973 and 1974.
I've added these to the "frank zappa > fanzines" section.

dieter jakob's zappa bootleg book...

ZAPPA BOOTLEG BOOK

Dieter Jakob is writing a book on Zappa bootlegs. Or to be more specific, I should say: "is writing THE book on Zappa bootlegs".

Here's the message:

I am going to write a (picture-)book about Zappa vinyl bootlegs and try to get together all photos of the bootlegs I know. As far as I know only the photos of the below mentioned bootlegs are still missing for my book. Maybe you can help me to get the one or the other photograph in order to complete some empty pages?

- photo of front cover
- photo of back cover (even if it is a neutral white cover)
- one photo of each label (black vinyl: photo of the label only, coloured vinyl: photo of the complete disc)
- a photo of poster, booklet or any other insert (if included)

Thanks a lot for your help!

Music is the best!

Dieter
