FROGG CAFE

from the Frogg Café newsletter:

The Frogg Cafe group improv limited edition CD-R is now available for retail purchase only from 10T Records.

http://www.10trecords.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=17

Here's a short blurb about the recording:

"If you are familiar with Frogg Cafe’s two studio albums you know the band has always sported an inventive, improvisational spirit. On "Noodles" this spirit takes center stage. Recorded live in the studio on June 26, 2002, all of the material on the album was performed in one take over the period of four hours (with humorous voice over’s by Dr. Mac and Brother Bam).

"Noodles", founding guitarist Frank Camiola’s Frogg Café swansong, is a fascinating look at a band’s creative process and demonstrates its many influences – jam, jazz and avante-garde classical and good old fashioned prog. Perhaps the album’s highlight is “Tagliarini” a 14 minute jam built on a fascinating rhythmic figure full of possibilities – somewhat reminiscent of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. Bill Ayasse first offers a colorful violin lead before handing the figure’s reins to Nick Lieto and his trumpet. From there the piece builds in intensity in a very Crimsoid manner.

While offerings of a band’s studio improvisations or demos often disappoint and sometimes seem gratuitously commercial, "Noodles" is a rare example that satisfies. "

  • frogg café: noodles
        (2005, cdr, usa, private release)
    • Over 50 minutes long, "Noodles" presents 5 tracks. 5 Improvisations that the band recorded in 2002.
This album had only been available at Frogg Café concerts, and is now offered through 10T Records.

I can only agree with the newsletter: improvised prog rock at its best.

2006/07/13  (Kamptheater Warm up Party)

We only arrived on Friday, so unfortunately we missed Lexolo and Daniel Rohr. Those who were there said that it had been good.

Picture on the right taken by Bazbo.

2006/07/14 Zappanale - day one

It's always a joy to see and hear Corrie van Binsbergen play. She opened the festival on Friday, solo on guitar.
She brought two excellent pieces, where she improvises on Brokken & Zappa samples: 'More stories from the girl who wasn't talking' and 'I wasn't talking'.

For me, this was the highlight of day one. It was a pity that Corrie had to play for only a handful of people. She deserved better.

Top!

--
Berlin-based Age continued. Progressive rock. The compositions sounded OK, but I had the impression that the perfomance lacked preciseness. Nevertheless, an interesting encounter.
--

Next up was FZLE from Denmark. FZLE stands for Frank Zappa Live Event - and it sure was an event! These guys had a lot of fun, and I mean A LOT of fun: 'cosmik debris', 'advance romance', 'peaches en regalia', 'dinah-moe-humm', 'broken hearts are for assholes', 'teenage prostitute', ...

The vocals were a bit off every once in a while, but that didn't matter too much. This was a fine performance and the crowd loved it.

Not counting Daniel Rohr, FZLE was the only band on Friday to perform Zappa pieces, and they did a great job. Love those horns.

Picture on the right taken by Bazbo.

--
Tripod
was up next. A progband that has no guitars...

They had shared the bill with the Markus Stauss Project only a couple of days earlier for a concert in Verviers, Belgium, and I was told that they were something to look out for.

Tripod is Keith Gurland on woodwinds, Steve Romano on drums & percussion, and Clint Bahr on 12-string bass & vocals.

Nice.
--

Highlight number two on day one were the Zappatistas. Yes, that's right, not only the Muffin Men are from the UK.

Not only have the Zappatsistas made one of the better records when it comes to playing Zappa's music, they also have an excellent live reputation. John Etheridge and Annie Whitehead are big names in the Canterbury scene so I was glad to see them perform. I would have liked to have a little chat with them. They played an excellent and very funny set.

Steve Lodder (keyboard and arranger!!) and John Etheridge played 'Strictly Genteel' as a duo. Let's hope this makes it onto the Zappanale CD.

Picture on the right taken by Bazbo.

Daniel Rohr had come over from Switzerland to perform his"Alles über Frank"  (everything on Frank).

The stage looked just great: one big red sofa in the middle. Daniel Rohr sitting in it, or climbing over it or walking round it, while performing and explaining Zappa's songs in German. The band was placed around the sofa, hardly visible, but playing very tight.

Daniel Rohr is a great performer, and he had brought along an impressive band. As German isn't my native tongue, I'm only wondering how much I missed on word plays, references and other little jokes.

I liked it a lot.

Picture on the right taken by Bazbo.

--
I didn't stay for Jane. I was getting pretty tired, had seen two superb acts (Corrie van Binsbergen, and the Zappatistas), and I didn't want to take a risk with Jane.
--

2006/07/15 Zappanale - day two

Jazzprojekt Hundehagen opened on Saturday. These guys had made a hell of an impression on me last year, so I was looking forward to see them again.

Again, they played a good set. Not as impressive as last year, as the surprise was gone, but still a good set.

For my ears, the set lasted a bit too long. They could have done without the 'rehearsal / show me the chord change' thing, but the overall impression was good. A nice opener.

Picture on the right taken by Xalke.

--

Kroner Circus - Pikantik was up next. Together with the message that the Ikarischer Ensemble would be playing on Sunday because Discus (again) couldn't make it.

As I understand it, the name of the band is Pikantik.
Their website explains:

-- PiKANTiK was established in Cracow (Poland) in 2006 by Michał "Mike" Worgacz - guitarist, vocalist, composer and lyrics writer, ex - leader of KRONER CiRKUS band.

In the beginning - PiKANTiK had to be only a single project, some kind of "zappa tribute idea" - created for a while ... but when musicians were engaged to this project ... they've made a decision - to be a band and to use PiKANTiK as a name of new group ...

Michał "Mike" WORGACZ (guitar / vocal), Krzysztof "Kris" WOJCiECHOWSKi (bass guitar), Rafał "Gooz" GUZiK (keyboards) and Filip "Phil" MOZUL (drums) established - PiKANTiK. --

I really liked the Pikantik performance. Michal Worgacz knows how to play a mean guitar. Great stuff. I'd love to hear more of them.
The guys also sounded like they had a lot of fun.

Picture on the right, taken by Fred, from the Pikantik website.

--

--

Soft Machine, or The Soft Machine Legacy was up next. I'm pretty convinced that, for many fans, this was the absolute highlight of the festival.

The band consisted of

  • John Etheridge
  • John Marshall
  • Theo Travis
  • Hugh Hopper

and they were great. They played Elton Dean's 'Seven For Lee' as their second piece and the mood was immediately set.

Fabulous.

We all know that Elton Dean cannot be replaced, but Theo Travis did a great job on the saxophones.

This should be released. Complete. Soft Machine at Zappanale.

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

--

The Troupe had the impossible task to perform after the Soft Machine Legacy.

Performing the complete "Joe's Garage", the band had the perfect setlist. The crowd was all warmed up ('overheated' might be an appropriote term), the Zappa songs are classics, and The Troupe is a fine troupe of musicians. Especially the voices of Frans van Deursen and Jeroen Zijlstra were very impressive.

Another excellent concert.

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

--
Headlining Saturday was the Paul Green School of Rock. The program said that they were to play Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath songs.

Don't get me wrong, I like these kids and Paul Green is doing some impressive stuff, but this is not my idea of a healiner.
We had another great day; didn't want to spoil that with some Zep or Black Sabbath, so we left after the first song (and we weren't the only ones).
--

2006/07/16 Zappanale - day three

Day three and Doot! opened.

I had seen the band (including André Cholmondeley) in Delft one week earlier where they looked like zombies, but played some of the best improvised contemporary stuff I had seen in a while.

Their Zappanale performance was no different.
Supported by a swarm of early birds (one might call them Zappateers), Doot! went sound-searching using Zappa & Hendrix themes as start-offs.

Just great.

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

--

Next up was the second appearance of the Paul Green School of Rock. This time playing Zappa music.

Fun, as always.

The kids stay rather close to the originals, only taking some liberty to solo. I saw some pretty impressive stuff.

Adrian Belew came on the stage to perform 'City Of Tiny Lites' with them. Goosebumps all over.

The Kids will be back the next years, each edition taking on another touring period. This means that they should be giving the "Freak Out" tour a try next year. So maybe then we'll hear the kids go for the String Quartet or for 15-minute jams or improvisations...

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

--

Les Polissons continued the strong line-up for Sunday. I hadn't heard them before and was pleasantly surprised.

It had gotten extremely hot in the meantime and the biggest part of the crowd had gone searching for shade in the tent, which made vocalist Sarah curse them in french...

Anyway, this was another highlight. Especially Sarah's vocal part kicked ass. She used two microphones, where one was connected to some sort of vocoder / effect box. To great effect. Somewhere near the end of the concert, she also did some great scatting.

Absolutely great.

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

--
I didn't catch much of the Ikarisches Ensemble, but I liked what I heard.
--
Headliner Adrian Belew did what everyone expected from him. He played an astonishing set: old and new songs, both from his solo career as from King Crimson.

I was told that his gear-box was missing, but I don't think anyone noticed. The loop-box worked and the feedback sounded like it should.

Another highlight.
And with former PGSoR's Julie Slick on bass and Eric Slick on drums this power trio was the perfect ending of an impressive festival.

The picture on the right was taken by Bazbo.

Zappanale 17 was another very fine edition of the Zappanale festival.

Corrie van Binsbergen, the Zappatistas, Soft Machine, Les Polissons and Adrian Belew impressed me most.

I still regret that the internet broadcasts & video recordings weren't part of Zappanale 17, but I hope that a lot of the music will get released on CD and / or DVD.

I also missed being able to meet the artists. There's nothing more informative than a short chat or interview. The internet interviews that we did during Zappanale 16 sure helped a lot & brought a lot of info to the UM files.

Anyway, Zappanale 17 was great & we'll probably be there again next year.

Thank you Arf Society !

ZAPPOSTROPHE - FAN KLUBU FRANKA ZAPPY

Sunday afternoon, almost one week ago, at Bad Doberan, (last day of the Zappanale festival), I encountered some members of the Czech Zappa Fanclub. They're a bunch of very friendly guys, wearing the best-looking Zappa T-shirts that I had seen during these three days.

Here are two remarkable facts about the Czech Zappa Fanclub:

  • they issue a fanzine (called Zappostrophe) of which 100 (!!) issues have been published up until today;
  • they have their own CDR-label

They also have a website at www.zappa.cz, but that's temporarily unavailable.

zappostrophe no.97  -  2005/02

incl.

  • westwood village memorial park & mortuary
  • new zappa bootlegs
  • the lenny bruce FBI file
  • zappa's hendrix guitar
  • mothermania
  • amougies '69
  • guitar center: rockwalk, hollywood
  • gail zappa
  • lukáš hurník: variations on lumpy gravy

zappostrophe no.99  -  2005/xx

incl.

  • zappanale 2005
  • new releases
  • zappanale 2005 on ragazzi
  • zappa plays zappa

zappostrophe no.100  -  2006/xx

incl.

  • zappanale 2005
  • new releases
  • zappanale 2005 on the ragazzi website
  • zappa plays zappa

LUKÁŠ HURNÍK

  • lukáš hurník: variace na lumpy gravy
        (2005, cdr, czech, fan 656)
    • January 14, 2004, the Pražskou Komorní Filharmonii, conductor Jiri Belohlávek and soloists Katerina Stupková and Pavel Fiedler, performed "Variace Na Lumpy Gravy" (Variations On Lumpy Gravy), a piece written by Lukáš Hurník.

The performance got released by the Czech Zappa Fan Club in 2005. Yes, the fanclub got its own label!!

The piece is astonishing. Lukáš Hurník uses a very classical approach: the philharmonic orchestra starts with the 'Lumpy Gravy' theme after which Katerina Stupková (baritone saxophone) and Pavel Fiedler (soprano saxophone) take over / join in. The melody-line changes, keeping the tempo at first, but the the 'lumpy gravy' feeling is always there. This is a great composition, paying a fantastic tribute to Frank Zappa.

The second track on this album is the same piece, but performed on a sequencer. Sort of synclavier sounding. Just great.

I like this a lot. It reminds me of the "Purple Cucumber" project, where a handful of contemporary belgian composers wrote pieces that were inspired by Frank Zappa.

Unfortunately, this release is available only to members of the Czech Frank Zappa Fanclub. If, however, you're able to get hold of it, you shouldn't hesitate.

ZAPPATEERS

Zappanale was fun. I heard some good music, including a couple of nice surprises, and I saw a bunch of friends, a couple of which even made the local newspaper.

R.STEVIE MOORE ON CORDELIA

  • r. stevie moore: delicate tension
(1978, lp, usa, hp music hps 30735)
    • R.Stevie Moore's second album "Delicate Tension" got released way back in 1978. A couple of years ago, it was made available again through Cordelia Records. The CD includeds a bunch of additional stuff, including the Stance 12" ep.
    • I had expected something in the line of "Phonography", Moore's first album from 1976. But where "Phonography" has a more progressive rock feeling, "Delicate Tension" goes for a more poppy approach. There's a lot of great sounding tunes on this album. I'm pretty convinced that there are a lot of well-known songwriters out there that would give an arm (or a leg, or maybe even both) to be able to write like this.  The CD bonus tracks also include two Nelson Riddle Orchestra performances over which R.Stevie Moore croones something like 'My Little Automobile Is Sad'.

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that my band SPECIAL OPPS will be performing LIVE @ The Palmer Room next Tuesday the 25th (a week from today) with a special 75-minute set from 8:00 - 9:15.  The band will feature myself, special guest Scheila Gonzalez (recently back from the Zappa Plays Zappa tour) on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, plus my regular rhythm section of Chris Spilsbury on guitar, Daren Burns on bass, and Craig Bunch on drums.

We will be performing some new selections including a couple jams I composed specifically for this show.  There will also be some surprises and other special guests.  The show is being filmed for the pilot episode of IndieAppeal with Shannon B. along with the other artists performing that evening, but we're going to be the first band for the first show, and I think that's pretty cool.

SPECIAL OPPS - Tuesday, July 25th @ 8 pm - 21+/$10 cover
The Palmer Room (behind Cucina Paradiso)
3387 Motor Avenue (at Woodbine)
Los Angeles, CA 90034
USA

I really hope to see you there!  The next announcement will have DVD pre-ordering information for the first entry in our "DVD Bootleg Club," plus how you can order the poster of my "EnnEmmEss" painting.

Music is the best!

R.STEVIE MOORE

  • r.stevie moore: zeitgeist
        (2006, cdr, usa, private release)
    • The latest R.Stevie Moore album, "Zeitgeist", is one superb album. It's difficult to describe as it is a mixture of different styles, both in original compositions as in coverversions.
The disc kicks off with a "Soundcheque Overture", a beautful collage that, for my part, could have taken up the entire disc. It even includes a quite recognisable Zappa sample. But there's also some folky, bluegrass stuff, a contemporary sounding piano piece ('Said Hi To Shostakovitch') or some tape-manipulated psychedelic pieces.
And if that isn't enough, "Zeitgeist" also presents shocking versions of Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message' and John Trubee's 'A Blind Man's Penis'.

      Hilarious. Unpredictable. Unconventional.
      To say the least.
    • R.Stevie Moore adds:
"beset with trials and tribulations, this recording was gathered from numerous homemade projects, covering the scattered period from late 2005 into April 2006. most all of the playing is awful, and the voice sure ain't what it used to be. hence the wink. ---- ---- love is dead, pal. questions? comments? consult the artist's bloog. and leave a greenback in the collection plate. no peace, no love."

OBNOXIOUS ANTIPOETRY FOR THE DAY...

Love
Copyright c 2006 John Trubee

Love
was merely a word
we used to fool each other
so that we could fuck
for a while.

To Run And Play And Dance In The Sun
Copyright c 2006 John Trubee

This adult world life
has got to go
The pretense
The money
The worrying about what the others think
when the others are all idiots
The worrying about appearances
and clothes
and jobs
and bank accounts
and cars
and houses
and money
and our image--

All so much shit
inculcated by idiots

None of it matters
Yet these deluded ninny dipshits
take it all so seriously.

What I really want:
To be as a child again
To bound, free, through the wilderness
To scream out loud forever
where nobody can hear me

To run and play and dance in the sun.

ZAPPANALE

We're off to Zappanale. Hope to see some of you there.
Last year's Zappanale was a blast. The combination of great bands and a nice audience can't be beat.
As you might recall, one of the 'new' things, was the live concert internet broadcasts. I was very happy to be contributing to this, even if it only meant that I had to chat (read: do some interviews) with the participating artists between the concerts to keep the internet audience interested between shows.
I got some nice reactions, and it was a lot of fun.

For a couple of reasons, these internet broadcasts won't be happening, which is a pity. I would have loved to do it again, and I'm also convinced that this is a missed opportunity. Not only to reach a wider audience, and to make it a more 'world-wide' event, but also to introduce a new and interesting Zappa-related site on the web.

Anyway, we're off to Zappanale, and I pretty sure that I'll be enjoying it again.

See you there.

PS: the picture on the right shows the cover of "Promozeuch Object", a promotional release by Weirdo Naffn, one of the biggest surprises of the 2005 edition of the Zappanale festival.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART: UNDER REVIEW

  • captain beefheart: under review
(2006, dvd, ger, sexy intellectual sidvd 500)
    • "Under Review" collects some short live & studio performances of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, but it's mostly about the chronological reviews from various Magic Band members.

You get an inside view of the Captain's / Magic Band's recording career. It's a bit like reading the Mike Barnes book, only this time you've got the musicians talking to you in person.

Essential if you want to learn more about Beefheart.

PINK FLOYD ON STAGE WITH ZAPPA

  • pink floyd: on stage with zappa
        (2006, cd, ??, ??) - feat. frank zappa
    • You knew it, I knew it.
Only a couple of months after the Amougies recordings surfaced, the first bootleg turned up...

      Factory pressed album.

BLUES EXPERIENCE

  • blues experience: live!
        (1991, cd, ??, ??) - incl. 'i'm the slime' (frank zappa)
    • German band Blues Experience recorded Frank Zappa's 'I'm The Slime'. It got released in 1991.

"Live!" is an all-blues album, including a couple of Hendrix tunes and even Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine'. Very guitar orientated.
      Fun.

ANDRE CHOLMONDELEY

  • andré cholmondeley: enigma with attitude
        (2006, cd, usa, te001)
    • André Cholmondeley was one of the founding members of Project/Object. Among lots of other things, he also toured with Don Preston, and more recently, he joined Doot! to perform at the Zappanale festival.

"Enigama With Attitude" is his first solo album. Excellent stuff.
It has lots of electronic soundscapes. I like it a lot.

Somewhere in the booklet, André says: "The CD face is a photo from NASA. It is of the discs sent into space with messages from Earth, intended to be discovered by alien life forms."
Well, I don't know what's on the discs that NASA sent, but they sure could include this album as well. Might even get these aliens interested in visiting... (despite the George Bush samples...)

KLIMPEREI

a message from CP:

After meeting The Mirror Stage with Alice, exchanging some tasty recipes with the American Frank Pahl (Music for desserts), and appearing in several compilations released by In Poly Sons, Klimperei gets back with a new concept album that we are proud to release ! It's a simple and popular concept which allows to create a great deal of stories and variations in the delicate music of the cranky Klimperei.

A young person is preparing to go to a party.
The positive fever of the preparations, the pleasant anguish to find the place (the famous Salle Polyvalente), to search for friends to have fun and suddenly some glances with somebody, a hope. It's the age at which all is possible, we say we'll meet again and we return home light-hearted. A banality that moves everybody, a story maybe without follow-up or with huge consequence.

The mechanical pop music based on melodica, keyboards and small percussions of Klimperei with its Pascal Comelade-like arrangements and its more synthetic and stirring pieces, illustrates wonderfully the seduction scenes and the variations of the feelings in this kind of parties.

With the echo of the cuckoo and the cock in the background, these short but swaying tracks will awaken your sensitiveness !

Lovingly daydreaming.

NEW FRANK ZAPPA BOOTLEGS

  • frank zappa and the mothers of invention: mono & acetates
        (2006, 3cd-bootleg, japan, howard carter)
    • Hugues-Robert Gros mentioned 2 new bootleg releases. The first one is called "Mono & Acetates" and collects:
      - the mono freak out version

      - the uncle meat demo acetate

WMRECORDINGS

a message from Marco Kalnenek:

Polish beats. With a twist.

That's basically what Kinetic Jane is all about.

Or in their own words:
Our music is a combination of a strong bass line supported by a strong rhythm and sounds of our world recorded during sessions, mostly improvised.
We commit ourselves completely to the music and spend on it all the time we dispose. We believe in the moment, which is strongly reflected in our music.

DOOT!

  • doot!: doot!
(2006, cdr, usa, cholly hoss productions / private release)
    • I saw Doot! perform in Delft the other night. A superb gig. They had some troubles during the first 10 minutes or so (the guy on the mixing board forgot that Pete plays the bass and that Stephen needed a bit of sound in his monitor...), but once that the problems were solved, it turned out to become one of the most interesting concerts that I've seen in a long while. Special Guest Andre Cholmondeley is a great guitar player and he dares to take the time to find the right frases and the right sounds. Excellent. Can't wait to see them again at Zappanale.

"Doot!", the album that I'm listening to right now, collects fragments of the various collaborations that The Duo has done the last year. Using familiar themes such as Frank Zappa's 'Stinkfoot' or 'Filthy Habits', or Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced', they look for the boundaries of these compositions.
Featured on this album as special guests are Andre Cholmondeley (who will be with the band at the Zappanale festival), Tom Fenton and Kilissa Cissoko (both from the Voice Of Cheez), Eugene Chadbourne and Nate Trier.

If you're able to see the band live, you'll be picking up this disc.
If you can't see them live, you should pick it up to get an idea what they're all about.
    • Recommended.
