random notes

from their website (2004):
"Blending psychedelic jazz with modern rock sensibilities, the music of The Wrong Object is influenced by a vast array of artists ranging from Canterbury Scene prog rock à la Soft Machine and Gong to Aka Moon, Charlie Mingus and Frank Zappa. While our repertoire contains mainly original compositions, we also play a special set of Zappa covers (including the classic 'King Kong').
Since its creation in early 2002, The Wrong Object has played some twenty gigs in various Belgian venues. Some of them were augmented by guest performances by the likes of tenor sax player Domgué, guitarist-composer Marco Maurizi and pataphysician-poet-vocalist Andrew Norris, whose work with the band culminated in a show held at the Galerie 2016 in Brussels on the occasion of Serge Vandercam's 79th birthday.
The Wrong Object will continue to perform in pubs, clubs and theaters next year and hopes to play Summer festivals abroad."

ELTON DEAN RIP - 1945-2006

Elton Dean passed away on the evening of February 7th in a London hospital due to heart and liver failure, on the day before he was to embark on a series of Soft Machine reunion gigs. Elton's untimely death is a sad loss for many. It also puts an abrupt end to an exciting collaboration and a burgeoning friendship with The Wrong Object.

Excerpts from Elton's recent Paris concert with the band will remain on our website as a tribute to Elton's continuing inspiration and his willingness to collaborate with like-minded musicians around the globe after 40-odd years as one of the world's best loved sax players: http://www.wrongobject.com/dean.php

------------- THE WRONG OBJECT -----------------

The Wrong Object will be returning to Bad Doberan. After their impressive concert at Zappanale in 2004, The Wrong Object has gone through some changes, has done various collaborations, and has released three albums. Here's a little conversation with Michel Delville.

UniMuta: Hello Michel,
How is The Wrong Object doing? I've noticed that you've played in France and in Italy recently. How did that go?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: We love playing in France and only wish it happened more often. Performing at the Triton in Paris is always a special experience - they've got one of the smartest, nicest and most knowledgeable prog-jazz-rock audiences I have ever played for. We really feel at home playing there.
The Italian interlude was also very pleasant - one of the gigs took place in Paestum, right next to some of the oldest Greek temples built in Italy, which created a very special atmosphere (we actually composed a new piece dedicatd to the site in collaboration with our good friend Biagio Francia). We also played in Athens in May (our first gigs in Greece ever) - an equally interesting albeit a bit weird experience as the first concert took place in a small club which could barely accommodate 50 people and the next day, bang, we found ourselves performing in front of a crowd of ca. 6000 at the European Jazz Festival. Talk about contrasts.

UniMuta: One week before Zappanale, The Wrong Object will be playing at the Gaume Jazz Festival in Rossignol (Belgium).  This will be on saturday, where you will be sharing the bill with Aka Moon! In your opinion, is there a big difference between playing for a jazz or for a progressive rock audience? Which one do you prefer?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: Yes, opening for Aka Moon makes a lot of sense. They opened things up for us all in many ways in the 1980s. They are the perfect example of a band which is equally at home with rock and jazz audiences although, like us, they rarely play "straight" rock festivals and concentrate on the jazz scene.
I like open-minded audiences, no matter how much or how little they know about the history of jazz or rock.

UniMuta: Next week, it's Zappanale time again. I can say 'again', because you already played there. In 2004. How do you look back on it? What's the biggest difference between then and now?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: I still have fond memories of Zappanale 2004 and our collaborations with Ed Mann (in fact, we're currently hatching up plans to play with him this Fall - nothing definite yet but some promising contacts). This year's line-up is very different from the 2004 version. Damien, our bass player, and myself are all that is left of the original Wrong Object. We now have the strongest teenage combo I have ever played with, with Jean-Paul Estiévenart (who was barely 21 years old when he won the Django D'Or last year and recently joined Peter Vermeersch's Flat Earth Society) on trumpet, Fred Delplancq (another prominent figure on the Belgian jazz scene) on tenor sax and Laurent Delchambre (who is equally at ease with the rock and jazz repertoire) on drums. They have been with us for a little more then three years now and the music is tighter than ever.

UniMuta: The last couple of years, The Wrong Object has featured a lot of special guests. Some of these can also be heard on your recordings. At Zappanale, Stanley Jason Zappa will join the band. How did that happen? Were you familiar with his playing before Zappanale?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: I have been corresponding on and off with Stanley over the last 3 or 4 years. I knew his work and he knew The Wrong Object and so I managed to convince him to join the Zappanale program. We have a lot in common, conceptually as well as musically. He has a HUGE sound, he is a born improviser and is the opposite of a bullshitter. His percussionist, Nick Skrowaczewski, will also join us on stage for a few numbers.

UniMuta: On Sunday, The Wrong Object (or at least a part of it?) will return the favour and join Stanley Jason Zappa on stage for his "The New Texture Pantonal Fellowship" project. Can you tell us a little bit about this?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: Stanley's own band, The New Texture Pan Tonal Fellowship, will involve The Wrong Object and other musicians taking part in the festival - the rest is top-secret (LOL) - you'll be in for a few surprises!

UniMuta: Talking about projects. I guess that almost everyone who plays in The Wrong Object is linked to (one or more) other projects. Could you name a few of these?

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: You should check out Fred's and Jean-Paul's solo works on their myspace pages. Laurent also plays in a Beefheartian post-punk band called The Friendly Dogs, in Markus Stauss's Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese, and is also working for the theater (as a musician) on a regular basis. Damien  and I have just started a new band tentatively called BLAST3 which will release an album for Moonjune in 2009. As for me, I also play in Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese and a new band called The Moving Tones which features Guy Segers, Frank Van der Kooij and Ivo Sans. You will find the relevant links amongst the top friends of The Wrong Obejct's myspace page (www.myspace.com/wrongobject).

UniMuta: Thanks & see you soon.

Michel Delville / The Wrong Object: You're welcome - see you at Z-2008!
www.myspace.com/micheldelville

The Wrong Object will be playing at Zappanale on Friday, 2008/08/15, at around 15.30 h. They will be joined by special guests Stanley Jason Zappa and Nick Skrowaczewski.
On Sunday, 2008/08/17, part of The Wrong Object will be featured in Stanley Jason Zappa's The New Texture Pan Tonal Fellowship.

==BPSP - THE BERLUSCONI PROTEST SONG PROJECT==

==PROJETTO PER UNA CANZONE ANTIBERLUSCONIANA==

(scroll down for an Italian translation)

This page welcomes contributions (in any language) from musicians from all over the world who fear that the Berlusconi administration is a danger to democracy and freedom.

We firmly believe that the fact that the Bush family has been shipped back to Texas should not distract us from other political diseases lurking in countries other than the US.

Non-musicians are welcome to visit the blog and leave comments and/or suggest lyrics for further musical adaptations.

"Berlusconi über Alles", the first track available on this page, is a hastily recorded punkish cover of a famous Dead Kennedys song Belgian band The Wrong Object (www.myspace.com/wrongobject) will record within the next few months and, hopefully, release before the end of 2009.

We look forward to your contributions and comments!

Mp3s can can be sent directly to the following address: wrongobject@hotmail.com via YouSendIt or Sendspace.

With all best wishes for the future,

BPSP

*PS: Although this page is primarily devoted to the uses and abuses of power perpetrated by Sua Emittenza SB, contributions relating to other figures and forms of emergence of the new fascism in all its guises and disguises are also welcome.*
August 16, 2018

We are pleased to announce that the final mix is in the can! What is more, the tracks have been mastered by nobody less that the great Pierre Vervloesem, which is another amazing bonus in itself.

more soon & à très bientôt,
