ANDRE CHOLMONDELEY - PROJECT/OBJECT - DON PRESTON

2006/04/21

from André Cholmondeley
subject: Project/Object & Don Preston

hello hello

we are in cleveland, the heart of rock n roll... myself and Eric 'n Eric just returned from a morning walk thru the HALL of FAME. Yeah, that was cool. It's easy to be real hip and shun the whole Academy/Hall thing...but... personally, I'm a sucker for the artifacts and actual instruments from amazing sessions etc that they have. A couple dumb exhibits, but all in all a blast of 100 years of incredible music & history. There's something special about seeing all the cool letters, guitars, amps, boots and other stuff from this mad pile of energy called rock n roll.

The project/object Tour continues into the Midwest -- c'mon out, and help us spread the word , if you have friends in the upcoming towns!!

And -this just in- the mighty SEAHAG (Roberto Mangano) will be along until ATLANTA 4/29, at least!

in the Hag's own words:" I've been touring for the past week around the northeast. I originally tried to play only a week at first, but the oceans have swept the hag into 10 more days of sailing the seas of fabreeze........I'll be selling Sound of Urchin cds at the merch booth! See you there,

Thanks, Seahag" ps ---check out Hag's video-directorial debut at www.myspace.com/mpb

As many of you know - a month ago we had some performances with the legendary DON PRESTON in London, Rotterdam and Belfast. An incredible time, that i will sometime on this tour post my diaries of.... but a highlight was visiting and performing at the BBC studios at Maida Vale.
Wow. London. Incredible time.

Today the webcast will be posted on bbc's site -links are below. They will leave it up there for one week so download the hell out of it.
Yo Jonny Pakalolo, check it out - we are on right before the Flaming Lips!!

-Andre'

PS my NEW CD "Enigma With Attitude" is available at the merch-table, in real life, soon for digital download at http://itsaboutmusic.com/
It's an hour of guitar experiments, ambient hip-hop influenced rock n roll instrumentals after too many 70s electronic records and news programs.

 THE JAMMYS RECORDING

The ZpZ performance at the Grammys is available at various places. The best sounding version is at Etree. That's the complete Jammys show. The ZpZ part of this recording is also available at the Zappateers site.
It sounds great.

Great Grande Mothers

Had the best concert experience in a long while on Friday night, when I went to see the Grande Mothers at the Redcat Theater. Who are the Grande Mothers, you ask? Zappa alums Don Preston, Roy Estrada, and Napoleon Murphy Brock, plus Chris Garcia and Miroslav Tadic on drums and guitar, respectively.

The first set featured Preston, Estrada, and Brock performing Stravinsky's Histoire de Soldat with a killer chamber ensemble. The second set was a smorgasbord of Zappa tunes. The Stravinsky set was fun (in part because of the Mothers' bad acting), but the Zappa set, which I realized later went on for over an hour, seemed to fly by.

It was just beautiful to be able to hear this music (from the front row, no less) played in the spirit in which it was originally conceived, by some of the guys who were originally involved. And though it wasn't a flawless performance (it was the first of two nights), it had more balls and verve and energy (especially given that these guys are approaching geezerhood) than a lot of the newer music I've been hearing lately. Napoleon Murphy Brock is particularly amazing--there just seems to be no limit to his energy, and I don't think I ever got from the records how truly skilled he is as both a singer and a reed player. But Estrada too was a trip--what fun to hear that wacky falsetto of his live!

There is a tendency with posthumous performances of Zappa's music to err on the "prog rock" side of things--to go for the cleanness of the 80s groups as opposed to the rawer, sloppier sound of the Mothers. That's probably a good thing when it comes to the chamber or orchestral stuff (which was rarely well-performed in Zappa's lifetime), but in a rock or jazz context it's an approach that can be deadly.

The Grande Mothers understand that even though Zappa never embraced rough musics like punk, he knew the value of musical rawness. And though the Redcat show clearly wasn't the sort of carnival experience that it probably would have been if Zappa had been involved, it was pretty damned close--which is good news for shmucks like me who never got to see the real McCoy when he was alive.

ON TO NORWAY
the GMS are on to Norway for 1 week with the Bergen Symphony Orchestra
performing FZ orchestral music
as well as their own 3 1/2 HOUR show
there will also be performances of
RITE OF SPRING - Stravinsky
IONISATION- Varese
THE UNANSWERED QUESTION - Ives
PROJECT X premiere LIVE performance from UNCLE MEAT

Hello everybody, by the way, hello all you kind subscribers to the Keneallist! How're you doing?

GUITAR THERAPY LIVE is coming soon, soon, soon. Thanks again, for your extreme patience, to those of you who pre-ordered the special edition CD/DVD set. The DVD has been a real bear to produce this time around, but we're confident that it's a quality thing and that you'll find the results worth the wait. Again, thanks so much to the kind folks who pre-ordered for allowing this project to happen.

My blog at MySpace has taken on large proportions. I wrote a bunch of entries while I was in Europe last month if you want to read about my experiences there. More recent topics  included my obsession with Donald Fagen's "Morph The Cat" album, the beginning stages of
construction on what may be my next studio release ("Scambot") and collaborations with Marco Minnemann, Playground Slap and an upcoming album of Albert Ayler compositions with Henry Kaiser and myself. And any number of other topics of varying relevance. Come by?

There's a thing over at Radio Keneally called "Lhai Sal Across The Water." Scott Chatfield compiled it. You can request it (it's credited to "MK & BFD" on the alphabeticized request list). Do so?

TRUBEE ON JONSON

Pompous, pretentious assertions for you to rip to atoms and fling back, negated and robbed of life...

"Damnedable" is not a word in my Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, but I so love its configuration and meaning that I insist on using it here, nonetheless.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Wickedness is always easier than virtue;
for it takes the short cut to everything.
~ Samuel Johnson

Oh! So that's why everything has always been so painful and difficult for me!

But wickedness often ends up in jail; with a slit throat in a ditch; itching a bad drug habit or dead of it; traumatized by self-ruined marriages due to cheap affairs; as a horrific auto wreck on the highway with beer bottles on the floorboards; on the lam in percolating paranoia; with a knife in the gut from a coke deal gone sour; or strung upside down on piano wire, battered and dead like Mussolini and his mistress...

Johnson neglects to mention the high price of wicked shortcuts. Johnson didn't mention the benefits of delayed gratification with which we were brainwashed as children, even when, as I have discovered, sometimes those supposed benefits are illusory; mere control mechanisms of the overlords.

Every situation must be analyzed. Consequences of choices must be considered. Responsibility must always reside with he who chooses.

There is a grand lack of reflection and thoughtfulness in the world today. The increased speed of the flow of information has degenerated the quality and quantity of thought and reflection devoted to the choices we make, and it has degenerated the tenor of public discourse.
The increased speed and volume flow of information steals the time from our lives that is required to process it--time which would better be devoted to thought and reflection. That's why so many shitty choices are made. Their consequences are evident for all to see everywhere.

Technological innovation often degrades, rather than enhances, our lives. Unintended consequences appear after it's too late.

I often ask myself of every choice: it this good for me? will this increase my happiness? will this improve the quality of my life? will it give me what I want? have I seriously considered what I want and why I want it?

There is an admitted lack of altruism here. Happiness cannot be induced into the world until the first person is responsible for his own happiness. Happiness then flows outward into the world. Altruism derived from social coercion repeatedly crashes as catastrophic, horrific, misbegotten utopias from hell.

Too often we assume that something is to be done by thoughtlessly imitating others and slavishly adopting the valuations of others, that damnedable mob; that because THE OTHERS do something, it is sufficient justification for us to make a similar action or choice.

There exist too many shitty decisions with no thought or reflection behind them.

I propose escaping from the ever-frenetic flow of useless information. I propose grabbing back the time of one's life to think and reflect; also, to laugh and play as children.

NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

  • frank zappa: you can't do that on stage anymore gold
        (2006, 2cd, ??, zappa fan trust zft 004/005)
    • A brand-new bootleg with a rather bizarre title: "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Gold". It includes parts of the two 1984 Hollywood concerts.
Both concerts are very good to say the least. And as a bonus, the July one has a lot of special guests.
I'm just wondering why they didn't put out the complete shows?

But then of course, you can always visit www.zappateers.com and check out the complete versions.

STEVE VAI ON HALO SOUNDTRACK

Steve Vai appear
s on the "Halo 2, Volume Two" soundtrack - a follow-up to "Halo 2, Volume One" soundtrack album - which also featured Steve's guitar work. Steve contributes guitar parts to the track "Reclaimer" which was recorded during the initial Halo sessions in Seattle in October 2003, but remained unreleased until now.

"Halo 2" Music Composer Martin O’Donnell explains: “In the summer of 2004, Nile Rodgers and I decided that it would be a good idea to present the music of "Halo 2" in two separate volumes. The first volume would contain all the music that was finished and mixed plus some ‘inspired by’ music from music groups whose music was being used in the game.

Since the first soundtrack was assembled before the game actually shipped, the second volume would contain the rest of the music, some that I was still composing and producing, and would be arranged for maximum listening pleasure. The music in Halo 2 will play back a little differently each time someone plays the game but on the soundtrack, I have the opportunity to arrange the music in a way that will never change.”

Halo 2, Volume Two will be released on April 25.

2006/04/14

from: andré cholmondeley
subject: Robbie 'Seahag' Mangano update

hey folks

wow. back in NJ... we just had an amazing time at STARLAND BALLROOM... Mahavishnu Project wowed them, then we rocked the crowd for nearly 3
hrs... an amazing, crazy Jersey crowd!! It was good to play at home -- so many familiar faces, old friends..and tons of new people. A dream gig. That venue is just one of the BEST, right up there with Variety Playhouse (ATL) and the Fox Theater (Boulder). Intense. One of the greatest sound systems I've even seen or heard, holy crap. And ironically, we missed NJ's smoke free revolution by 24 hrs...!! We played the LAST show in that venue under the 'breathe my smoke' rules......

OK -I wanted to send a quick note to inform you --

UPDATE!....UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE......UPDATE..

SEAHAG aka ROBBBIE MANGANO has joined us for the first several gigs!!!

He will be playing UNTIL April 19 - Toad's Place.

We hope he'll be able to squeeze a couple gigs into his nutty schedule at the end of the tour!! Stay tuned to the site for updates..and check out Robbie's world at www.robbieseahag.com for wonderment and musical insanities.

See you in Albany tonight!!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

  • captain beefheart & the magic band: amsterdam '80
(2006, cd, uk, major league productions mlp12cd)
    • "Amsterdam '80" is a brand-new release. As you can imagine, the album presents the concert that Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band did at the 'Paradiso' concert hall in Amsterdam, November 1, 1980.
The concert is well-known among Beefheart fans. It has been broadcast on Dutch radio a couple of times, and recordings circultate among fans. It even appears on a couple of Captain Beefheart bootlegs.
For your pleasure (and mine),  MLP has released this concert officially. The album was mastered from the original tapes, meaning that the sound of this album is better than any recording of this concert that I'd heard up until now.
The concert itself is very good - which should come as no surprise with a Magic Band that consisted of Richard Midnight Hatsize Snyder, Robert Arthur Williams, Jeff Moris Tepper and Eric Drew Feldman.

Finally, a new Captain Beefheart album that looks good and sounds even better.

Sanctuary Records Releases Keith Emerson's New Albums

The legendary Keith Emerson (T-Bones, The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer), one of the greatest keyboardist in rock history, exploded into superstardom in the 1970s with partners Greg Lake and Carl Palmer in the boundary-smashing progressive-rock trio. A great present for all his fans all over the world will be three special solo titles -- 'Off The Shelf, ' 'At The Movies' and 'Honky' -- scheduled for release through Sanctuary Records in Spring 2006.

'Off The Shelf' will be released on April 25, 2006. The songs, referred to by Emerson as an "audio montage of musical snapshots, " are rare and previously unreleased solo recordings the keyboardist stockpiled from the mid-1980s to almost the present day. It features original compositions and unique covers in an unpredictable mix of classical, jazz and Brazilian styles. Emerson's adds his distinctive stamp to songs by Elvis Presley, Frank Zappa, Thelonius Monk, Ian Dury
and Gary Burton.

Special guests include Palmer, guitarist Pat Travers and The Band vocalist/drummer Levon Helm, who is the featured singer on "Straight Between The Eyes" from the film 'Best Revenge.' Alternate versions of Emerson classics "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "America" and "Abaddon's Bolero" are additional highlights.

The 15 tracks on 'Off The Shelf, ' which are all making their CD debut, include: "Abaddon's Bolero, " "Pictures At An Exhibition, " "And Then January, " "Rio, " "Straight Between The Eyes, " "Don't Be Cruel, " "Au Privave, " "Walter L, " "Rhythm-A-Ning, " "Asian Pear, " "Motor Bikin', " "America, " "Lumpy Gravy, " "Up The Elephant And Around The Castle" and "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll."

'At The Movies' hits stores on May 23, 2006. It is a three-CD collection of excerpts and pieces from seven films scored by Emerson between 1981 and 2004. Most of this music is very rare and highly sought after by Emerson collectors, and much of it is making its official CD debut in the United States. Disc 1 includes the complete soundtrack to the 1981 Sylvester Stallone suspense thriller "Nighthawks, " which features a rare vocal performance from Emerson on a cover of the Spencer Davis Group classic "I'm A Man." Music from 1986's 'Best Revenge' ends the first disc, including Boston vocalist Brad Delp guesting on "Playing For Keeps." Disc 2 covers three Italian movie scores starting with the 1980 horror film 'Inferno' directed by Dario Argento. Four tracks from director Michele Soavi's 1988 film 'La Chiesa' (or 'The Church') follows. The disc closes with nine tracks from 1986's 'Murderock.' Disc 3 includes the scores for two Japanese films -- 1985's animated feature 'Harmageddon' and 2004's 'Godzilla: Final Wars, ' a remake of the classic original monster movie.

The 67 tracks on 'At The Movies' include:

Disc 1: U.S. Movies

'NIGHTHAWKS' - "Main Theme, " "Mean Stalkin', " "The Bust, " "Nighthawking, " "The Chase, " "I'm A Man, " "The Chopper, " "Tramway, " "I'm Comin' In, " "Face To Face" and "Flight Of The Hawk."

'BEST REVENGE' - "Orchestral Suite, " "Playing For Keeps, " "The Dreamer (Love Theme), " "Wha'dya Mean, " "Outgoing Tide, " "For Those Who Win" and "The Runner."

Disc 2: Italian Movies

'INFERNO' - "Main Title, " "Rose Descends Into The Cellar, " "Taxi Ride (Rome), " "The Library, " "Sarah In The Library Vaults, " "Bookbinder's Delight, " "Rose Leaves The Apartment, " "Rose Gets It, " "Elisa's Story, " "Cat Attic Attack, " "Kazanian's Tarantella, " "Mark's Discovery, " "Mater Tennerbrarum, " "Inferno Finale, " "Cigarettes, Ices Etc." and "Inferno Extras."

'LA CHIESA' - "The Church - Main Theme, " "The Possession, " "Prelude 24" and "La Chiesa Revisited."

'MURDEROCK' - "Main Theme, " "Not So Innocent, " "Prelude To Candice, " "Don't Go In The Shower, " "Coffee Time, " "Candice, " "New York Dash, " "Tonight Is Not Your Night" and "The Spillone." Disc 3: Japanese Movies

'HARMAGEDDON' - "Theme Of Floi, " "Jo And Michiko, " "Sonny's Skate State, " "Zamedy Stomp, " "Challenge Of The Psionic Fighters, " "Children Of The Light" and "Godzilla Vs. Gotengo."

'GODZILLA: FINAL WARS' - "Main Theme, " "EDF Headquarters Fight, " "EDF Museum, " "Infant Island, " "Rodan Attacks NYC, " "Earth Defense Forces Theme, " "Motorcycle Battle, " "Godzilla Awakens, " "Love Theme, " "Monster Zero Theme, " "Cruising The Cirro Stratus, " "Godzilla Theme" and "Godzilla: Final Wars End Theme."

'Honky' will also be released on May 23, 2006. Emerson's debut solo album was recorded in 1980 for the Italian label Bubble. 'Honky' had a limited CD release in 2000 but this reissue is newly remastered and it includes detailed liner notes and photos. This eclectic, highly diverse album found Emerson displaying his sense of humor front and center. Rock, classical, jazz, honky tonk, boogie-woogie and Caribbean/West Indian styles are all here, along with pseudo-broadcasts of snippets of old standards, commentary and easygoing, lighthearted vocals. Emerson's original pieces blend effortlessly with his interpretations of George Malcolm's "Bach Before The Mast, " Billy Taylor's "Big Horn Breakdown" and Meade Lux Lewis' "Yancy Special."

The 11 tracks on 'Honky' include: "Hello Sailor, " "Bach Before The Mast, " "Hello Sailor Finale, " "Salt Cay, " "Green Ice, " "Intro-Juicing, " "Big Horn Breakdown, " "Yancy Special, " "Rum-A-Ting, " "Chickcharnie" and "Jesus Loves Me."

JAMTASTIC VOYAGE

Remember that time John Popper made a speech wearing his "jammies"? Or that time everyone booed when Phish won awards for Studio Album of the Year and Live Jam of the Year? What about Buddy Guy dubbing John Mayer the future of the blues? Derek Trucks Band as the "house band"? A jam-packed first show at Irving Plaza when the trophy was a bowl?

You don't? Then maybe you shouldn't let the sixth installment of the Jammys pass you by.

In addition to honoring the live music experience with awards in categories like Tour of the Year, Live Performance of the Year, Best Live Archival Album and New Groove, the Jammys provides inimitable live experiences in the form of one-off collaborations and all-out jams.

Hippies? Sure, the Jammys has been known to attract a few. But if that's why you missed Sinead O'Connor's return to the stage, not to mention her jam with Huey Lewis and Burning Spear, then shame on you.

This year's event, taking place at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in NYC, boasts a typically atypical variety of artists.

Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Billy Kreutzmann will be there, as will guitar great Joe Satriani, Afro-pop goddess Angelique Kidjo, jam stalwart Steve Kimock, Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins ... and on and on.

Who's jam(my)ing with whom? I don't want to give it all away, but some highlights will include Guster with Peter Frampton, Blues Traveler with Bettye Lavette and Dweezil Zappa with Chick Corea.

The show will culminate with a tribute to Frank Zappa, who will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Zappa cohort Napoleon Murphy Brock and Dweezil will be on hand to make sure it's done right.

Tickets are $39.50-$59.50 at Ticketmaster.

To an outsider, Igor Stravinsky and Frank Zappa seemed to reside on different planets, even though both lived in the Hollywood Hills in the late 1960s. But insiders know Zappa was a serious Stravinsky buff, invoking the Russian's acerbic spirit, techniques and even some of his music in his own gargantuan output. Thus, the teaming of one of Zappa's favorite Stravinsky pieces -- the ever-zesty, ever-acidic "L'Histoire du Soldat" -- with a survey of Zappa's intricate
idiosyncrasies for rock band at REDCAT on Friday night was not so much far-fetched as it was far-sighted.

As it happened, though, Zappa came off a lot better than Stravinsky.

There are rumblings of a Zappa revival afoot in the world -- what with his son, Dweezil, preparing to take an authorized "Zappa Plays Zappa" band on the road next month (they'll be at the Wiltern June 23) and this ongoing Grande Mothers project, which was launched in Europe in 2003. The latter group is a quintet containing three alumni of various Zappa bands -- bassist Roy Estrada (an original Mother), keyboardist Don Preston and vocalist/reeds Napoleon Murphy Brock -- plus Eastern European wah-wah guitar wizard Miroslav Tadic and drummer Christopher Garcia.

This outfit was road-tested (their 66th gig), as precise as any of Zappa's bands and able to burn brightly on a wide range of Zappa selections on Friday (the set list was completely different Saturday).
With Brock's powerful vocals, physical shtick and ability to double expertly on flute and tenor sax coupled with Preston's and Tadic's electronic salvos, the evening contained a lot of the contradictory eclectic, serious and circusy flavors of a Zappa show.

Indeed, in some cases, the Grande Mothers were able to go deeper into the material, rather than merely parroting Zappa's notoriously tricky composed lines. "The Idiot Bastard Son," for example, revealed some lovely harmonic ideas only hinted at on the original Mothers recording.

All on board were adept at exploring the drumfire jazz-rock riffs of the early '70s, and there was a deftly done sample of Zappa's doo-wop sendups.

All the while, the screen behind the band displayed slides of Stravinsky beaming down paternally -- as if one needed more reminding after the "Rite of Spring" riff in the middle of "Duke of Prunes."

Ironically, the discipline and canny pacing of the Zappa portion of the program were almost entirely missing in the Stravinsky perfperf.
The three Mothers took the roles of the Narrator (Estrada), the Soldier (Preston) and the Devil (Brock), making tedious, hammy work of C.F. Ramuz's playlet, and there were missed cues and outbreaks of scrappy playing in the otherwise high-spirited seven-piece instrumental ensemble. More rehearsal, tighter control of the dialogue, please.

MARTIN LICKERT

March 2006

Martin Lickert, a barrister, died suddenly, only in his 50s. Once a bookie, then horse owner, and a lover of Cheltenham, he came to the bar late, after being touched with his 15 minutes of fame. He was Ringo Starr's chauffeur, and played a prominent role in the film 200 Motels, about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Jeff Simmons, the Mothers' bass player, had left the group and Zappa was unable to find anyone to play him. In exasperation, he told his entourage the next person to walk into the room would have the part. In walked Lickert, who had gone to buy cigarettes for his boss, Ringo. He was hired, and performed adequately, but became a better barrister than he was a bass player's stand-in.

Grand Opera House ready to rock and roll

Special to The News Journal

Eric Svalgård bought the Paul Green's School of Rock Music franchise rights for New Castle County.

By MAUREEN MILFORD The News Journal (Wilmington, DE)

2006/04/15

Welcome to the Grand Opera House and the Kingdom of Rrrrrock.

You heard right. In July, a School of Rock Music will open at the stately Grand and students will be creating some musical fusion inside its 135-year-old walls.

The after-school music program, part of the Paul Green's School of Rock Music chain, is being developed by keyboardist Eric Svalgård of Media, Pa., who bought the franchise rights for New Castle County in February for $40,000.

Legend has it that the school's founder, Paul Green, 33, was the inspiration for actor Jack Black's over-the-top Dewey Finn (a.k.a "Mr.S") in the 2003 movie, "School of Rock."

"I recognize Paul Green in Jack Black -- like some of his expressions," said Matt Manser, 18, a six-year student at the Philadelphia School of Rock. "But Paul's not that cheesy."

However, Green, described by some as "confrontational," has been known to tell a student guitar player to go out and perform a "face-melting solo."

"That movie was a PG version of me," Green said. "I teach by the seat of my pants, so I never know what's going to come out."

Still, the real Paul Green's School of Rock Music is not like Hollywood's "bubble gum" version, said Manser, who said he's not a fan of the movie because "they stole the idea from us." Green said he started the school in his house in 1998.

Manser, who plays guitar and has performed with classic rock icons like Peter Frampton and Alice Cooper through the school, said the school has been an important part of his life, introducing him to people he never would have met at high school.

"Rock School is like a community," where students play everything from classic rock to shred metal to punk to alternative rock, Manser said.

Svalgård said the school's marketing strategy is targeted at kids like Manser and Eric Dicandilo, 17, of Downingtown, Pa. The guitar and bass player has been going to the Downingtown School of Rock for two years.

Dicandilo admits he didn't know a scale or a chord when he started. Now, his band Stevadelic is getting gigs at local bars.

And there's another benefit to rock school: "You get a lot of groupies," Dicandilo said.

Kids are the market, but the customers are the parents who pay the bills. Tuition is $200 a month, although there will be an introductory rate of $180 a month until enrollment reaches 60. Students, who receive one private 45-minute lesson a week, are exposed to the full range of rock music from rockabilly to funk. They are also encouraged to come to the school at any time and jam, Svalgård said.

Svalgård, 50, who is currently on a 28-city tour with Project Object, a Frank Zappa tribute band, hooked up with the Grand after he decided to open a School of Rock franchise in February. Besides the initial franchise fee, Svalgård will pay 5 percent of the monthly gross revenues to the franchisor, Paul Green School of Rock Music LLC in Philadelphia. Paul Green is president of the privately held company.

"In exchange, we get their national marketing exposure," said Svalgård, who attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Although Svalgård looked in suburbia for a location, the opera house was a great fit, he said. He declined to say what his business arrangement is with the Grand.

Kenneth A. Wesler, executive director of the Grand, who was not at the opera house this week, did not return calls for comment.

"I'll bring a youthful excitement and vigor that maybe the Grand is missing now," Svalgård said.

The Delaware school will be launched with a benefit concert June 24 at the Grand. Students who are part of the Paul Green's School of Rock All-Stars will perform a classic rock show. Proceeds will benefit Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children.

Green, who has a degree in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, moved in 2000 to space on Race Street in Philadelphia.

There are now about 14 School of Rock locations from Cherry Hill, N.J., to Hollywood, Calif.

Billed as a performance-based music program, the idea is to give middle and high school students a real rock experience, including a concert on a stage three times a year. When a show is in development, there are three-hour rehearsals every week. The first show Svalgård plans to put on is Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

"We're putting them in a real venue with real lights and a real audience, not just their mothers and girlfriends," Svalgård said.

But students don't get a diploma when they leave, Green said.

"They get a handshake and kick in the pants," Green said.

TOMMY MARS

from Robert Foetsch, March 2006
- after I asked him for some extra info regarding the Bath Tub Ring, a band that featured Tommy Mars at the time.

we were a VERY good band at the time and played throughout CT, MA and VT.  we spent the summer of '68 in Vermont, rented the entire "Highgate Springs Hotel" and had a remarkable summer, playing 5 nights a week.  Tommy was always FABULOUS and as friendly as a young kitten.  you couldn't help but love him.  Of course, at that time, we were doing all the 60's tunes.  Our 3rd set ALWAYS opened with Tommy going out alone playing "Whiter Shade Of Pale" by Procal Harem and he sang in in his own made up Japanese language.  jesus he was funny and i am certain that the crowds , and there were crowds, always believed he was truly singing in Japanese.  The group WE stole him from was "The Minute Men".....another Naugatuck garage band.  I am certain that they did not record.  Tommy was thrilled to come on with us.  As an aside to all of this, Walt Sorrentino and I, along with 2 other locals, went on to be "PASTRAMI MALTED", the weird band that did "Wiwwian Wevy" on Metromedia in 1969.  You can key the song title into Google and look at the VAULT site, scroll to PASTRAMI MALTED and see our sheet music.  i am the goofy skinny one in the 'Seymour 69' tee shirt.  thanks for your interest.

Take care,  Bob

RESOLVER + BRUTALITY

Zappa's "Resolver + Brutality" tape has been mentioned on these pages before. If you're not familiar with the subject, go to:

Chris Opperman (check out his "Foggy Highway" album) added the following info:

"The beginning of “Big Sequence” on Resolver eventually became “Religious Superstition.”

BTW, have I told you that belgian national radio show Cucamonga (on radio 1) played some parts of R + B last December?
Wonder who they got that from  ;-)

         (2004, cd, ??, riotseason reposecd07)
    • For those of you who wonder what I do when I have a day off...
I've been listening to "Minstrel In The Galaxy". Listened to it a couple of times. Well, actually, almost the entire afternoon.
Acid Mothers Temple is well-know for their jammy & psychedelic approach and "Minsterl In The Galaxy" is no exception.
There are only three songs on this album, the second one even being over 40 minutes long.

This is a very modest, yet experimental album. The perfect companion for a relaxed afternoon.

ARF DOSSIER 46

March 2006, the 46th issue of the Arf-Dossier got published.

MORE TRUBEE

"Oftentimes people are exceedingly possessive and territorial regarding their money because they lack any higher values to defend."

--John Trubee

-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/-*/

Notice how I qualified my quote with "Oftentimes".
I wasn't being an absolutist about my assertion.

There are other values in the world aside from money--health, love, art, freedom, free time, natural beauty in the world around us, etc.

I LOVE to attack the MONEY GOD because it is TABOO to openly question and criticize it in our shallow, consumerist society.

Look at all the money we make. It sustains us to keep living so we can continue this empty cycle of stunted work to keep making the money to buy the food to get the energy to go to work to get the money to buy the food to have the energy to go to work to get the money....
Don't you see the absurdity of this situation and how it devalues our lives? Don't you see how we must invent values in our lives to compensate for the awful waste in our lives whoring after money?

When I worked at Hansel Ford I used to go out at break and watch glorious sunsets in the western sky while harried car buyers were negotiating points on their car loans. How pitiful to ALWAYS be focusing on these pitiful green pieces of paper that pass through our lives like lukewarm diarrhea rather than all the cool and beautiful things in the world surrounding us. I pitied the car buyers anxious about their car loans while I enjoyed glorious sunsets which are always FREE.

Have you ever stepped on an ant colony and seen all the hard work of the myriad ants crushed in an instant?---or watched it be blown away in stormy weather despite all the efforts of the ants to pile up those grains of dirt? That ant colony represents all your money and possessions blowing away in the winds of time. All our life efforts to pile up that green paper is for naught because it all blows away in time and what we do to get that paper renders the great potential of our lives meaningless by always dragging it down into absurd activities for temporary green paper.
You need to go watch 'The Treasure of Sierra Madre Again'.

When you are an old geezer hooked up to tubes in a hospice and you review the scenes of you life, will you have an erection over having balanced your check book or the how large the numbers were in it?

Or will you remember all the FUN you had? If one is constantly whoring after and worrying about money, that isn't a very meaningful or enjoyable life. I see much in the thoughtless attitudes of people all around me that is stunted, pathetic, regressive, and meaningless.

It's enough that I trade 8 hours a day for money. In my free time I don't wants to obsess about it and I concentrate on the better things in life.

We reside in a culture of pitiful, mentally-stunted consumer philistines.
Their placing money ALWAYS as the highest value in lieu of anything else is grotesque and vomitous. Their lives are hideously empty.
They are to be pitied and avoided.

Aside from money, what do you value? What IS IT THAT YOU DO POSIT AS YOUR HIGHEST VALUE, ANYWAY? I get the idea that you, like most money-obsessed people, DON'T REALLY KNOW AND HAVE NEVER BOTHERED TO THINK ABOUT IT.

Nothing? If so, then you got some heavy soul-searching to do.

Peace, baby--

Bro John

If you're a regular visitor of this web-site (it's a matter of taste), and if you're not familiar with Pierre Vervloesem's work, you should really check him out.

Pierre Vervloesem already had an entry in the UM Files, but I've updated it a bit...

DOCTOR DARK (& SOME EUGENE CHADBOURNE)

Bill Saunders, better know to you as the Doctor Dark vocalist wrote a nice piece in a local paper on Eugene Chadbourne’s December gig in New Haven.

You can find it at:

http://newhavenadvocate.com/gbase/archives/index?searchPhrase=chadbourne&submit.x=26&submit.y=8

Bill told me that the April 1st gig of Doctor Dark was good, and that it had Steve Chillemi sitting in on the drums because Eric Slick couldn’t make it. He will be behind the kit on April 19 though, where Doctor Dark will be sharing the bill with Project/Object.

Well, it's an excellent article, so just in case the link doesn't work, I'm putting this in the UM Archives as well:

Duck Hunting with Eugene Chadbourne

The DIY indie-music legend arrives once again in New Haven.

(The New Haven Advocate - December 8, 2005)

A sharp-witted musicologist, an idiosyncratic composer, collaborator and cataloguer of everything generally described by music critics as "avant," Eugene Chadbourne has been flying under the radar of the mainstream music industry for the past thirty-odd years. That could be an accomplishment, or maybe his blip was mistaken for an aberration.

Regardless, Chadbourne's output is diverse and voluminous, ranging from traditional American to free-wheeling improvisations to sonic experiments in terror, while making many a whistle stop in between. He has conspired with musical innovators like John Zorn, Fred Frith, and Henry Kaiser, to name a few; Camper Van Beethoven and the Violent Femmes, to name a couple more.

Rest assured, when Eugene's frenzified fingers finish a solo, you may scratch your head wondering if you just watched him play the devil or play the bejesus out of his instrument.

And while you may not find Chadbourne's recordings at the Virgin Mega Store, fear not: You can buy them directly through his website (www.eugenechadbourne.com). "Doc Chad" has documented his own remarkable career with a ceaseless stream of self-releases on his House of Chadula label. Each release has unique packaging, designed and assembled by the artist.

To replace standard jewel cases, Chadbourne chops up and recycles old album sleeves. He then tapes up the loose edges and affixes his own weirdo artwork over what was already there. "This fits into my plot to take all recordings and somehow change them into my own music," he says. "I used to do this with cassettes that I would get from nightclubs, all the demo stuff. Now I am doing it with old album covers."

Would you expect any different from one of the credited architects of the DIY home-taping scene?

In the early '80s, Eugene founded the group Shockabilly, with future Bongwater head Kramer, and propelled the folk-country-rockabilly genres to new frights. It was during this time that Chadbourne the Arch-Innovator premiered a series of solo performance pieces featuring homemade instruments, thus introducing such oddball music-making contraptions as the Electric Rake, the Shopping Cart, the Toast-Ar and the Porthole to bemused and befuddled audiences.

"The Toast-Ar was obviously the best," Chadbourne recalls, "a toaster with a banjo neck attached to it. You

could play a raga on it, and make toast for the audience simultaneously.

"Don't expect to see this in New Haven!"

I've learned to not know what to expect. The last time Eugene came to town, I found myself singing backing vocals on everything from the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks, Fuck Off" to an unlikely version of Michael Jackson's "Beat It."

"Duck Chad!" , Chadbourne's latest release, documents some of his musical travels through 2004-05 and includes four songs recorded, in the Elm City at Café Nine last December, in collaboration with my Captain Beefheart tribute band, Doctor Dark. The session was captured by recording vulture Warren Brelsford. Two of the tracks featured are Beefheart compositions ("Veteran's Day Poppy" and "Plastic Factory"). Two others are solo banjo arrangements: "Lyndie," a lyrically reworked version of the Association's "Windy" that takes dead aim at Lyndie Englund, poster girl for the Iraq prison-abuse scandal, and an inspired, stringed version of the John Coltrane classic "Pursuance."

But despite his creative meandering into others' material, Chadbourne's original compositions are some of the strongest in the batch. "Grey" is a quirky, uplifting exploration into diversity and individuality, with lyrics penned by his daughter Lizzie. The words were in response to comments made by an offensive guest lecturer at her high school who tried to portray people as falling into only two categories. She writes (and Chad sings), with impeccable phrasing:

We stepped out of the world of black.

We tried to never look back.

We ran away from the world of white.

We don't agree with what is said to be right

The results are powerful and infectious.

In "Cheney's Hunting Ducks," Chad bears his draft-dodger street cred and sardonic wit in a catchy country protest condemnation of Operation Enduring Bullshit:

Cheney's hunting ducks.

The troops break for lunch,

soon they get killed a bunch.

Driving armored, an armored truck.

In South Carolina, Cheney's hunting ducks.

It's the lunch break in the War on Terror.

Hide the corpses in the accounting errors.

(For the record, Mr. Chadbourne already has his presidential pardon for ducking Vietnam, whereas five-deferment Dicky may be wishing for a pardon of his own some day.)

Given the political climate of this day and age, I wonder whether Chadbourne's outspoken views have ever clashed with his audience's sensibilities. "Normally," he says, "I am playing to a friendly audience. But once, at a free show in Columbia, South Carolina, a fight broke out between military guys who were mad at my lyrics and ’hippies' who agreed.

"But it is important to note," he adds, "that a show attended by 90 percent Army and Navy in Pensacola went over really well during the Reagan era, and I was told at one point there were more photos of me in the U.S. German Army barracks than any one pin-up."

That's quite an accomplishment for a conscientious objector.

"I was not a CO," he says, by way of correction. "I could not get that status because I did not have a record of attending church! I was a non-registree."

Non-registree sounds good to me.

Where do I sign up?

PALINCKX

  • palinckx: it's frontal dog  (9)
        (1998, cd, canada,
    victo  cd061)
    • I saw dutch band Palinckx in concert last weekend, performing The Beatles. Big Fun. Anyway, this is a good reason to update their discographical data.

"It's Frontal Dog" came out in 1998, and has the typical Palinckx sound. The band has been stripped down to a quartet (after "The Psychedelic Years" quintet) and features vocalist Han Buhrs III as part of the band.
Compared with their other albums, "It's Frontal Dog" is more straight-forward. Bluesy Beefheart with a Snakefinger guitar sound.
      I love it.

  • palinckx: momentum & wag  (10)
        (2002, cd, nl, vonk 8)
    • "Momentum & Wag" - which in my opinion has one of the best album covers I've ever seen - is the most poppy sounding Palinckx CD up until today. (Notable for the reggae version of Kraftwerk's 'Das Modell".)
I really like the sound of Han Buhrs' voice. Beefheart and/or David Thomas are never far away.
"Momentum & Wag" also is the first album that has Donotask on turntables, keys and other effects.

      Poppy Palinckx.

  • buhrs, donotask, purves & palinckx: spam, scores & encores  (12)
        (2004, cd, nl, vonk 10)
    • "Spam, Scores & Encores" is a collection of compositions / contributions of the various Palinckx members.
The back-cover of the album says:
"Spam, Scores & Encores is not a normal Palinckx release. It compiles 22 free-link-rarity recordings that bandmembers made for all kinds of reasons, with a variety of musicians and under circumstances that ranged from 'top quality' to notoriously lo fi'."

For my taste, they should release more stuff like this. This one superb compilation / collection.

      We want more.

  • palinckx: live recordings 2001 - 2005
        (2005, cd-promo, nl, private release)
    • "Palinckx Live Recordings 2001 - 2005" is promotional album that presents Palinckx in different line-ups and at different locations.
The album also includes 'World War IV', one of the band's Beatles Medleys.

Excellent stuff. It shows what Palinckx is all about.

ZAPPA PROJECT IN ESTONIA

From May 8 until May 28, the National Library in Tallinn, Estonia, will feature a Zappa Exhibition!!

Organiser Avo Raup says:

The exhibition room is big, over 200 m2. All the exhibition is based on my private collection. I plan to show:

  • about 100 Zappa books
  • magazines: underground papers (LA Free Press, International Times, ...) and glossy magazines from all over the world
  • posters & big banners with Zappa quotes
  • Zappa's albums (CD & vinyl)
  • continuous video screenings (the official videos & documentaries) - the program will change every day

If you want to get an idea of some of the material that will show up at this exhibit, you should visit Avo's excellent website. Be sure to check out the Magazines section, where a lot of the actual articles have been made available.

WM RECORDINGS

YAWK! is a word that Vernon LeNoir likes to say when something strange happens during production.

It expresses the connection to the subconcious archetype Conrad Vitus Skopzik called "Archetype of Wonder". The manifestation of an entity as wonder doesn't come via a subjective view of life but as an objective expression of natures unbearable cry of flesh.

Anyway, you'd better visit
http://www.wmrecordings.com/releases/wm040.htm
for Vernon LeNoir's latest album.

It's free.
It's cool.

best wishes,

Project/Object Tour Update

Contains:

1-my current ebay item
2-long, sometimes bitter spiel about the Project/Object "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" tour and RELIX article
(includes-call for Voter-registration help at each venue.)

.......PROJECT OBJECT NEWS CRAWL......

Hello...has spring sprung??

Hope you are well and ready for the new season......

1- First off - a completely self-serving commercial message, my UN-sanctioned "Gear-for-Food" program continues with another fine pedal on ebay -- check it out if you are so inclined: a rare Digitech Whammy Pedal II, this is the black one, not the red. It's the 2nd one they came out with, some prefer the sound of this one to the original, at the very least it's the easiest one to change intervals on in performance. There's about a day left on it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7401550309&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

2-In other, bigger news - we will hit the road in a matter of days.... another round of ZAPPA MUSIC served up to you.. a short Project Object tour of the northeastern quadrant, USA....special guests - at TWO SHOWS each, will be ED MANN/percussion and DENNY WALLEY/slide guitar supreme.
Openers along the way (see dates for details) will include the PAUL GREEN SCHOOL OF ROCK and the MAHAVISHNU PROJECT (with P/O basssist Dave Johnsen).

FIRST - let me solicit your HELP - anyone interested in the usual VOLUNTEER ROADIE deal...just email me back. But more importantly --- if you have a way to help plan/coordinate a bipartisan VOTER REGISTRATION drive at any of the shows - drop me an email ASAP. We did this a few times years ago - Frank of course did it in 1988, and ALWAYS urged people to get involved/register and VOTE.

In these times -- it's so much more important. The ONLY thing i see working is LOCAL INVOLVEMENT. We could go on and on about the misery at the top of the rotting fish...but -- THERE IS GREAT STUFF HAPPENING in AMERICA, coast to coast... in TOWNS and CITIES!! Really!! if you look it up -- quietly, people are doing some good environmental stuff, at least 200 mayors have signed legislation that basically commits their cities/towns to KYOTO TREATY changes and planning. And you have all kinds of independent stuff cropping up. I also think- NO MATTER YOUR AFFILIATION -- you should be concerned about one party, ANY party - having complete control of the congress/legislative branch the judicial branch, AND the executive branch!!!! And - even if that happens ---and it logically/legally WILL- then said party should be bending over BACKWARDS to make sure they have transparency, meritocracy and openness. I don't have to continue, do I?? So- please...HELP US provide for and remind people to - ACT LOCALLY!!! even if you HATE the whole voting thing... how about those LOCAL bond issues...school budgets.... etc.

So--it's the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED tour. Why call it that?? well- of course, there's the not-so-ironic reality that Bush, with great, expensive fanfare, declared his little Iraq mission 'accomplished' over three years ago, sure, that comes to mind. The atrocious, failed mess that BushCo and his NeoCons have created up there is hard to forget, but hey - MUSIC CAN MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER..! and...it is MUSIC we will deliver!! It's incredible that Condi has (now???) admitted to "THOUSANDS OF ERRORS" in the war on Iraq. Jeezus.

But really - I want to CELEBRATE that the "mission" I set out to "accomplish" back in about 1990 or 1992...has largely been met...!!
Indeed - the simple goal of getting out there and raising the profile of this music one set of ears at a time, and often hundreds of sets of ears at a time....has come true. We want to pause, rest on our laurels for a minute...!!

We want to thank you folks for coming out each and every time, and helping support what we do. No is getting rich doing this, and like you, our love for all music and especially Zappa is what drives us. We really do get some amazing energy out of you Zappa-freaks, thank you for being so good to us.

I want to thank every band member who has passed through the ringer that is project/object.. and especially the ones that are there NOW. As we go out on this tour, we have a NEW DRUMMER (Eric Slick) and some NEW MUSIC selected from the giant list of possibilities, plus some stuff we haven't done in 5 or 6 years.

Also-the larger ZAPPA-landscape has changed , the Zappa family is FINALLY doing some really cool stuff - the recent, great IMAGINARY DISEASES live CD -is the long awaited Grand Wazoo band, and the "Zappa plays Zappa" tour is a fantastic lineup of alumni and Zappa family, they will be touring Europe and US dates are coming in right now.

We want to thank the entire jamband community, which has always been very supportive to P/O, has embraced Zappa and in fact, the current issue of RELIX features Frank heavily! (BTW -Next issue... wow- a Pete Townshend cover story...!) But Did Pete convince them what/who to write about beforehand???

What!!?? Rumor has it, well-sourced rumor, that Gail and the Zappa forces.... coerced RELIX into NOT MENTIONING any other Zappa cover bands stuff....and to only interviewing the TWO (TWO!!!) Zappa alumni that they did talk to - albeit good choices - Steve Vai and Mike Keneally.

What a bummer- to be SEEMINGLY forced and browbeaten into NOT mentioning, for starters, the Zappanale, the Grandmothers(!!), Bogus Pomp, Ed Palermo, Voice of Cheez, URR, Muffin Men, School OF Rock, Jimmy Carl Black....and yes, P/O, especially when they interviewed several people who have PERFORMED with us!! (Garl Lucas, Mike Keneally, Chuck Garvey of moe.) or people we have shared bills with (yonder mtn, moe., disco biscuits)

Am i bitter?? f*ck yeah!!! and why can't i even write "f*ck" properly?? well, 'cos some of you have jobs with web-servers that block english words from email..sorry..!! But yeah -- thanks RELIX for damaging forever your journalistic integrity, as far as i';m concerned.. How can i read it now and trust that they did the WHOLE story and not just what the paranoid/control freak artist wanted? I really want to get to the bottom of this...... anyone have some dirt???

I love RELIX... we even know some people there, and i will await hearing their side of this... but -- fans are already restless about the rest of us - all these people working -high profile- globally to further frank's music - that were left unmentioned. Maybe they are just planning to write about the Zappa-revolution another day. The work that Phish, moe., Zappanale, P/O and countless others have done to advance this music... i am proud to be a part of it! We'll see.

BTW - in the (great series of articles) -- there is an interview with GAIL ZAPPA.
With her characteristic "charm", Gail proclaims that bands who don't "turn in their setlists for licensing" are "f*cking people over" by not getting permission. I fail to see how going broke for a dozen years, living in cheap, sh*tty hotels for 6 weeks, and eating out of truck stops, just to have fun doing this music, is "f*cking over gail zappa", but , i have given up trying to plumb the depths of her bitter insanity. F*CK GAIL ZAPPA AND HER BULLSH*T. There , i said it.

Anyway --i am elated that FRANK got the press he deserves in that community. All of this means - more people will get a chance to hear Frank's music performed..... we are proud to be a part of keeping this music alive.

So -while our "Mission" has been "Accomplished" - we have gotten this music to new audiences, and we pause to ponder it all -- we will continue playing this music for as long as we can!!! Viva Zappa!! Viva Original Music!! F*ck the Haters!!

thanks for reading this/let's REGISTER AND VOTE
-Andre'

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - G.O.I.N.

G.O.I.N. stands for Get Out of Iraq Now, and it's the name of Eugene Chadbourne's latest band. Or better, it's the name of the band that he is touring with at this very moment.

Dr. Chad/vocals/banjo/guitar
Brian Ritchie/bass/shakuhachi
Victor de Lorenzo/percussion
Brian Jackson/vocals/keyboards

I saw the band last Friday in Baarle-Nassau, NL, and it was a very impressive show. Besides the anti-war songs, the band played some jazz standards and a bunch of old blues tunes. Impressive and hilarious at the same time.

  • eugene chadbourne: duck, chad!
        (2005, cdr, usa, chadbourne products)
    • "Duck, Chad!" is another Do It Yourself product from the Chadbourne store.
The disc contains 'Cheney's Hunting Ducks', explaining the tone and the title of this very fine album. There are a lot of participants on this album: Schroeder plays drums on a couple of tracks; there's the Doctor Dark band with whom Dr. Chad performed an evening of Beefheart material; Brian Jackson (who's also in G.O.I.N. is present); and there's some interesting material with Han Bennink.

Excellent stuff, and not only for the Chadbourne / Doctor Dark collaboration on 'Veterans' Day Poppy' and 'Plastic Factory'.

RANDY AND MICHAEL BRECKER
