CHRIS OPPERMAN - 2005/03/21 |
[Chris Opperman Mailing List - Monday, March 21st, 2005]
Episode #34:
Swing into
Spring!
* SPECIAL
OPPS Tomorrow (Tuesday) Night @ Level One!
* Album #4: "Beyond the Foggy Highway" Completed!
* SPECIAL OPPS: Live @ Level One DVD Editing Completed!
* ** SPECIAL OPPS Studio Sessions Begin Saturday, April 23rd **
* SPECIAL OPPS Tomorrow Night @ Level One!
Chris
Opperman Presents @ Level One
TOMORROW, March 22nd
6311 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA - 21+, $5
Thank you so much to everyone who came out a couple
of weeks ago! It was the most successful Oppy Night yet and I really
appreciate it a lot. The good news is that starting in May we'll be going
weekly and then starting in June I will be doing 3-4 nights a week at
Level
One booking only great music and developing the venue into
one of the most artist-friendly places to play in LA. It's going to be
wonderful.
I'm also
compiling a seperate mailing list for my Level One events, so if you'd
like to be on that one as well, simply respond to this e-mail and I'll add
you.
This week, we have my cellist's ensemble,
Triple Helix,
performing followed by what will be a wild performance by
SPECIAL OPPS
featuring myself on piano,
Jeffrey Gray
on guitar,
Jen Kuhn
on cello,
Daren Burns
on bass,
David Gaziel
on drums,
Clark Freeman
on percussion, and a special appearance by vocalist
Talia
Mays. We will be playing a couple new songs including
The
Real McCoy which was debuted at the last show and an
improvisation called
A Fire in the
Street is Not Like a Fire in the Heart.
After that will be my favorite country-rock ensemble
Jettson (who just seems to be getting better with every
performance) and then
The Academy
of Chess & Checkers will close us out.
* Album #4: "Beyond the Foggy Highway"
Completed!
My first live album has been mastered by
Scott
Chatfield and is ready to go! Release date is still set
for Tuesday, April 19th! Pre-order now at
www.oppymusic.com.
* SPECIAL OPPS: Live @ Level One DVD
Editing Completed!
Last week,
Johnny D.
and I made the final edits to the Special Opps DVD! It's
a wonderful affair, containing footage of the entire August 24th show as
well as over an hour-and-a-half of bonus footage including interviews and
"The
Room 5 Collection," which contains 5 songs from my Room 5
performances last year. Now we're entering the artwork/authoring phase
which will be done by
Jason
Feinberg. That having been said, we decided as a record
company to shelve it until the
SPECIAL OPPS
studio album comes out this fall, since that's the project
that we want to focus on.
* SPECIAL OPPS Studio Sessions Begin
Saturday, April 23rd
There were lots of days where I thought that this
would never be possible, but
SPECIAL OPPS
will be going into the studio on Saturday, April 23rd &
Sunday, April 24th to lay down basic tracks for an actual studio rock
album!!! We will be recording at
The
Mothership and
Neil Citron
will be engineering. I will be sitting in the producer's
chair and everyone's going to be playing their collective asses off.
Should be quite the experience (finally!).
As a side note, we will not be accepting pre-orders
on the studio album until the master is completed and we have entered the
artwork phase because we've had some problems with that in the past and I
don't feel comfortable holding people's money for such a long period of
time. However, those of you who would like to help can help by simply
pre-ordering the live album or ordering my back catalog, which is
available on my website for $30! That would really help a lot.
Okay, back to practicing! Thank you!
-- Chris Opperman

THE WRONG OBJECT |
- the wrong object:
live at zappanale 2004
(2005, cdr-pro, bel, maximalist records mr 0004)
- For me, one of the highlights of the 2004 Zappanale festival was
seeing the Wrong Object on stage. With, or even without Ed
Mann, these guys gave a hell of a show.
I caught the band in Liège a couple of days ago, and they might have
changed their line-up, but they're sounding more powerful than ever.
"Live At Zappanale 2004" is an excellent introduction that should get
them into a club near you.
There's a whole new bunch of concert dates coming up. More info
soon...

LESTER |
from: Hasi
march 2005
just to let you know that there is an orchestral
performance of FZ's music in Austria (Stadttheater, Wiener Neustadt) on
May 12 2005.
The project is initiated by Raoul Herget, who is the
Director of the local Music conservatory (Mathias Hauer Conservatory), it
is called:
ZAPPA
played by LESTER
The name LESTER is a hommage to Lester Bowie, who's
brother Joseph Bowie will play trombone and vocals in this concert. Not
much more is known to me at this point of time, only that among the songs
due to be performed is The Black Page #1 (see the link below).

Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius !!
|
JOE DENINZON & STRATOSPHEERIUS |
- joe deninzon &
stratospheerius: live wires
(2004, cd, usa, d-zone records)
- Stratospheerius is Joe
Deninzon's band. Their (or his) latest album is called "Live
Wires" and captures the band live in concert in 2003.
Stratospheerius is a jam band, which means that they play a
song and that they improvise on it. If I tell you that Joe Deninzon
plays the electric violin and that Jake Ezra plays the guitar,
you can imagine that some heavy, ripping soloing takes place. Jazzy
angles, funky grooves, it's all here. If you're into Steve Kimock,
or into Zappa, just to drop a couple of names, this is your
thing!
Absolute highlights (and brilliant performances) are Zappa's
'Magic Fingers' and Danny Elfman's 'Theme From The Simpsons'. I
hope they will be sending Matt Groening a copy. He'll love it.
I'm listening to 'Acid Rabbits' right now, for the third time in a
row. 12 minutes of pure fun, with Alex Skolnick guesting
on jazz-guitar. This is a great album.
- Order your copy from
www.joedeninzon.com
|
|
Joe Deninzon also sat in with
Project/Object on various occasions for
many years, and can be heard on their "Absolutely Live" album.March 2005, Joe Deninzon added:
"I moved to New york in 1997, and had been a Zappa fan for many years, so
naturally, anytime I saw an add for a Project/Object or an Ed Palermo Big Band
concert, I would make it a point to be there. Speaking of which, I've also sat
in with Ed palermo's band a number of times.
We do perform Frank Zappa's 'Magic Fingers' often at our shows. we also play
'King Kong' and 'Willie the Pimp', occasionally. With my acoustic projects, I
love to play 'Blessed Relief'. Certain songs intrigue me, and I love turning
people on to certain music in an artist's catalogue that I feel has been
overlooked. 'Magic Fingers' has stuck with me since the first time I heard it."

appreciative of the response and said it was "way better than I could've

a nice baby grand for those of you who have been waiting years for such an
occassion! I will be wearing a suit and a tie, and I will be performing
everyone's favorite pieces from "Klavierstucke" including a bunch of
pieces I've never performed live before.
* Steve Vai's "Real Illusions:
Reflections" #147 on the Billboard Top 200
Steve Vai's
first studio album of all-new material in over 5 years, "Real
Illusions: Reflections" hit stores a couple weeks ago and
is now #147 on the Billboard charts! I haven't played on a
Billboard-charting album since Keneally's 2000 album "Dancing," and I'm
excited to have played on an album that's cracked the Top 150. The album
is also the 5th best selling album via the Internet and the 15th biggest
Independent album. Awesome. Steve is currently on tour, so you should go
to
www.vai.com
and check out his show with his new band
The Breed.
* Album #4: "Beyond the Foggy Highway"
Completed!
Scott
Chatfield and I got together after a Keneally show in
Carlsbad Saturday afternoon and made the final edits to "Beyond the Foggy
Highway." It's now 15 - 17% better that we took the time to make those
edits (we made it about 4 minutes shorter) and we're real excited about
it. Release date has been set for Tuesday, April 19th. Album #5, a
studio album with my band
SPECIAL OPPS
will be underway starting in April.

*Dream Magazine* describes the sound of Alec K.
Redfearn and The Eyesores as, "...a complex mix of psychedelic folk,
progrock, old-time counrty, acidic cabaret, dark circus music, and
sinister dream fragments that haunt in recurring motifs...From harsh
nightmare riddles, to sweetly swooning tranced-out droning somnambulant
reveries, or an almost indie-pop brightness, this is all well worth
investigating." Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island in the US, Alec K.
Redfearn and The Eyesores are post-rock's magical surrealists. Always
evolving and ever elusive, their music combines a spectrum of influences.
Their sound is beautiful and horrific, elegant and cynical; it crosses
genres as easily as a ghost floats through solid walls. Their latest
album, *The Quiet Room,* is the bands' 4th release, and their first on
Cuneiform Records.

Marc Guillermont's "Zappostrophe", not brand-new, but now to me; and a
beautiful Cerio poster.
|
MARC GUILLERMONT |
- marc guillermont:
zappostrophe - tribute to frank zappa
(2004, cd, fr, private release)
- Multi-instrumentalist Marc Guillermont recorded this album
in 2004. "Zappostrophe" is a mostly instrumental album, and as the
title suggests, it's a Frank Zappa tribute album. Musically, it
reminds me a lot of Steve Vai's excellent "Flex-Able" album. The
atmosphere is completely Zappa: arrangements, compositions, guitar
soli,...
If you check out the titles of the various tracks, you'll immediately
see which Zappa composition gave Marc the inspiration.
A very fine album indeed.

It just never ends, and that's the beauty of it. A couple of concert
announcements and two fabulous albums on Cuneiform. What else do you need?

FAST 'N BULBOUS |
- fast 'n bulbous: pork chop blue around the rind
(2005, cd, usa, cuneiform)
- About three or four years ago, Phillip Johnston put together
Fast
'N Bulbous, The Captain Beefheart Tribute. The band made a very
impressive demo and played a handful of gigs including a fabulous
concert in Brugge, Belgium. And now, out of the blue, there's "Pork
Chop Blue Around The Rind", an album filled with Captain
Beefheart compositions. The first thing I noticed was that the line-up
had changed quit a bit. Besides Phillip Johnston, only Gary
Lucas is still around. I was rather curious to find out how that
would reflect on this album.
"Pork Chop Blue" is a great album. Phillip Johnston has re-arranged
the compositions from vocals / rock band to guitar, bass, drums plus
trumpet, trombone, alto and baritone sax. He did an excellent job. You
don't even wonder where the vocals are...
A very fine choice of compositions, great arrangements, superbly
played & impressive improvisations. Need I say more?

FOREVER EINSTEIN |
- forever einstein: racket science
(2005, cd, usa, cuneiform rune 206)
- Now here's a threesome that'll show you what prog rock really is
about. "Racket Science" is the fifth album from Forever Einstein, a
Connecticut-based guitar, bass and drums trio. No fancy stuff, just
music: a clean guitar, a fretless bass and tight drums. Forever
Einstein offers instrumental, rock-based music: beautiful
compositions, flavoured with lots of time-changes and mood swings.
"Racket Science" displays a fine mixture of musical ideas, using and
refering to various influences: surf music, jazz, Raymond Scott, King
Crimson, Snakefinger (!), and lots and lots more.
- This is a very impressive album. Check it out. It should be available in the better record store of from

KLIMPEREI |
A promotional message from Klimperei
Also in the "classic" Absurd circular
foldout cover, this time in a tasty shade of hot pink, comes La Tordeuse à
Bandes Obliques (I'm not going make any attempts at translating the title
if that's OK with you), the latest offering from the quintessentially
underground and decidedly potty world of Klimperei. Essentially the
brainchild of Christophe Petchanatz (along with Los Paranos, Al and Del,
Deleted, Lapin Gris and Totentanz and goodness knows how many other
outfits), the group has been steadily amassing a huge archive of
deliciously naïve mini-compositions for piano, winds and lo-fi
electronics, to which can be added 28 more here. If you have a soft spot
for the loopier end of English Experimentalism (John White, Howard
Skempton, Christopher Hobbs, Penguin Café Orchestra..), or the crankier
corners of RIO (Pascal Comelade, ZNR..), you'll be as happy with this as
little Maria Amaryllis, for whose first birthday the album has been
released to celebrate. Behind all the above names of course stands Satie,
so it's no surprise to find a couple of decidedly oblique - twisted, more
like - references to Le Maître d'Arcueil herein, notably "Les Dominos",
which revamps one of the well-worn "Gymnopédies" into something that would
make even the late great Les Dawson's toes curl up. Even better is "Vive
le Vent", which will have you reaching for the tinsel and crackers in no
time. Fewer than 300 shopping days left to Christmas, kids - get buying
right now.

ARTHUR BARROW |
- arthur barrow: on time
(2003, cdr, usa, private release)
- Arthur Barrow's "On Time" is his fourth album (not counting
his Mona Lisa Overdrive project), and it features a lot of familiar
names:
Vinnie Colaiuta, Tommy Mars, Bruce Fowler, Robert
Williams and Don Preston.
It's very difficult to describe the music on this album (and that's a
very positive remark!). It's contemporary, and a bit jazzy as well. It
even shows that Arthur Barrow has played with Zappa for years.
'Selva Savia' is my favourite composition, with Robert Williams
on the cowbell tree, combining both oriental scales (how does he get
these throat singers out of his machine?) and the perfect Miles Davis
groove.

KENEALLIST - March

THE KENEALLIST - March 1 2005
Hey! Hi! It's Mike. Two shows at the end of this week, which is the
first week of March, so happy March to you…
2005/03/04 Mike Keneally Band – concert ‘The
Baked Potato’, North Hollywood, ca, usa

yourself…) Golly, when was the last MKB show? I can't remember, but here
comes another one, with all proper band members in place. We're
rehearsing twice for this one! And, golly, the very next day…
2005/03/05 Mike Keneally and
Bryan Beller – concert ‘Museum Of Making Music’, Carlsbad, CA, usa
Did you hear that? It's free! Free, I tell you.
And here comes yet more free music, in areas other than Southern
California, in just a couple of weeks from now:
2005/03/14 Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller –
concert ‘Fazio's Frets & Friends’, Manchester, Missouri, usa
(Mike will be bringing his remarkable new Taylor T5
Thinline 5-Way acoustic/electric guitar.
Admission free unless otherwise noted.)

Bryan Beller – concert ‘Steilberg String Instruments‘, Louisville,
Kentucky, usa

Bryan Beller – concert ‘guitar center’, Towson, Maryland, usa
Come to
all of these shows! I'm planning to!
TOUR?!?
In April and May, it looks like the Mike Keneally Band will be touring,
finally! Sadly Nick D. can't make the tour (he'll be drumming with Tears
For Fears again at that time) but Joe Travers has stepped into the fray
and saved our bacon. Stay tuned for the official announcement of the
dates and locations.
Website news [http://www.keneally.com]:
we recently put a couple of new Quick Time videos on the front page - "My
Dilemma" from the December show at the Belly-Up (featuring the wonderful
and much missed Wes Wehmiller on bass), and a solo piano performance of
"I, Drum-Running, Am Clapboard Bound," featuring me wearing a Glenn Gould
cap.
Bunches of new music up at RadioKeneally.com [http://www.radiokeneally.com],
including a small slew of recordings from the late seventies - things my
brother Marty and I recorded at home, including a nice version of Jeff
Beck's "Diamond Dust" (with Marty on lead guitar - in fact most of the
guitar you'll hear on these early recordings is Marty, I was mainly a
keyboardist in those days), Allan Holdsworth's "Floppy Hat" as a guitar
duet for me and Marty, a cracking version of ELP's "The Barbarian" with a
lot of wrong notes in it, a solo Fender Rhodes performance of "Little
House I Used To Live In," a weird song I wrote when I was 16 called
"Dogtail Chase" and loads of other dark secrets from my prog-teen past.
It's all requestable, go there now!
Many thanks to Which One's Pink's Dan Johnson for setting up a cozy spot
for Keneally friends at MySpace.com [http://www.myspace.com/mikekeneally].
More news so soon you can taste it --- have a great week!
Your love puppy,
Mike Keneally

STEVE VAI |
- steve vai:
real illusions - reflections
(2005, cd, usa, favored nations)
- Here it is. Steve Vai's first 'real' solo album in a couple of
years.
Those of you who know me a bit better (or even those of you who have
seen me running around in my Vai t-shirt), know that I'm a Vai fan. I
like the way how he makes his guitar sing, and how he manages to play
these twisted melodies a little different each time around.
Steve Vai has a very recognisable, very personal sound, both in guitar
tone as in composition. Once again, he succeeded in glueing me to my
headphones. Besides Billy Sheenan (bass) and Jeremy Colson
(drum) (the both of them incredible - just listen to 'Freak Show
Excess'), "Real Illusions - Reflections" also features a fabulous track
with the Dutch Metropole Orkest, as well as Laurel Fishman and Thomas
Nordegg on 'speaking'.
"Real Illusions - Reflections" is a very, very fine Steve Vai album.
