I have two issues of a rather old Mothers fanzine, called "Mothers Home Journal". They were issued in the states somewhere in the early seventies, around the same time that Urban Gwerder did his Hot Raz Times in Switserland. I only have issues number 6 and 7. Does anyone know how many issues
were made? I am looking for the other issues, originals or xeroxed. Any
help is appreciated. |

GUY DAROL & PIERREJEAN GAUCHER'S ZAPPE ZAPPA |
|
Guy Darol has written three books about Zappa. In 1996, he wrote "Frank Zappa, La Parade de l'Homme-Wazoo"; in 2000 he co-wrote some sort of Zappa dictionary "Zappa de Z à A", together with Dominique Jeunot; en more recently, he finished "Frank Zappa, l'Amérique en déshabillé". December 2, 2003, Guy will host a Zappa tribute at Le Carré Magique, Lannion, Côtes d'Armor in France.
And while we're on the subject of memorable concerts, the Gaucher / Godin concert at Zappanale 2002 remains one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Reason enough for me to (finally) update the UM-files on Pierrejean Gaucher and Christophe Godin. Check it out. And visit their sites as well while you're at it. - Info: Guy Darol |

THE ZAPPA SURF ALBUM * THE ZAPPA SURF ALBUM |
|
The "Surf Instrumental cover versions of tunes by Frank Zappa" project Alan Jenkins says: "Cordelia Records are currently inviting submissions for a various artists CD. If you would like to be on this album you have to record a tune written by Frank Zappa and it has to be a surf instrumental. Instrumental guitar music that isn't strictly surf music, such as the kind of thing The Ventures or The Shadows do, would also be perfectly acceptable. Other kinds of instrumentals might possibly be ok too, if in doubt drop us an email at cordelia@stayfree.co.uk. But surf instrumentals are best. If you play in an actual surf band and you record a Frank Zappa tune you're almost certainly welcome, at least at this early stage." more info at: http://homepages.stayfree.co.uk/cordelia/Pages/Zappa%20Surf.htm deadline = January 2004 - Info: Alan Jenkins |

[Chris Opperman Mailing List - November 10th,
2003] Episode # 13: Good News! Goth is Dead. 25th Birthday Bash! As scary as it is, I will be turning 25 in a couple
of weeks, and to celebrate the Acoustic Playhouse is hosting a huge
party/concert for me on my birthday and they let me fill up the roster
with all my friends and favorite musicians from around town. It's
going to be an extremely entertaining and fun show and we'll also be
celebrating the 5-year anniversary of the release of my first album,
Oppy Music, Vol. I, so we're going to be playing some stuff we haven't
played in a long time as well as a bunch of new and made-up stuff.
Here's the line-up for the show! Chris Opperman Birthday Bash -
Thursday, November 20th Brian McGinty - 8:00 -
8:20 pm Tempest/Acoustic Playhouse The band line-up for Special
Opps in this concert is going to be myself on piano and vocals, Todd
Lieberman on guitar and vocals, Jen Kuhn on electric cello, Isaac Slape
on electric bass, and Kahlil Sabbagh on the drums. Shazam! Also,
Kat Parsons will be sitting in with us for one of her songs towards the
end of our set. She has a really drop-jaw amazing voice and I'm
really looking forward to playing music with her and seeing her play as
well. She has a new song she just wrote called "How About We
See Other People and You Don't" that is surely going to wind
up on the radio someday. Anyway, if you haven't seen Special
Opps play yet, now's the time to come check us out! The show is
going to be something really special, and then when Telepathy hits the
stage, it'll be time to booze up and riot and see one of the most
entertaining bands out there in LA. Good vibes, great music, cool
people, I'll see you there. It's going to be a blast and a half. * The Universe Will Provide
Update Mike Keneally and I spent a
heavenly week in Holland in September recording "The Universe
Will Provide," an original work for electric guitar & 50-piece
orchestra composed by Mike and orchestrated by Mike and myself, with the
Metropole Orchestra. Wow. Talk about amazing musical
experiences. The orchestra played the music with even more passion
during the recording sessions than they did in the live performance in
Amsterdam last June and the record is really something very special.
I believe that it's going to come out next Spring, so I'll obviously let
you know when it does, but this is very special music. Extra props
to Co de Kloet, the man who made this all happen, as well as Scott
Chatfield, Pieter van Hoogdalem, Jurjen Hempel, and the Metropole
Orchestra. I can't wait until this record comes out. It's
amazing and I'm really very proud to have played such an important role
in its creation. I listen to it and I can't even believe how good
it is. It's amazing. Seriously. * Concepts of Non-linear Time Update Well, Scott Chatfield and I
mastered my third studio album, Concepts of Non-linear Time, late
last summer and I was hoping to get it out right away, but now I'm in
the artwork phase and I still don't have any idea what we're going to do
for a cover (although I'm thinking that the record will have a spring
theme since Klavierstucke had a fall theme), or who's going to make it,
or even exactly what label is going to release it. So until I
solve those problems the record isn't going to come out. I'm
hoping to get it all together in time for Spring, though. Sorry
this stuff takes me so long, what can I say? I'm a perfectionist.
A cover's a pretty darn important thing, too, albums have to have good
covers. I'm getting pretty close to just attempting to paint one
myself, but I think I've decided that I want it to have a photo similar
to the Klavierstucke cover, but shot in the spring with a really pretty blonde
girl sitting on the opposite side of the park bench that I sat on in the
Klavierstucke cover wearing a really pretty dress. I really like
that idea because what can I say? I really like pretty blonde
girls. Okay, I'm outta here, music is the best. Visit oppymusic.com. See you on the 20th. Peace, -- Chris Opperman |

Muffin Men and Ensemble 10:10 play tremendous concert in The Ocean, London |
|
The Muffin Men and Ensemble 10:10, which feature some members of The Liverpool Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, played an excellent concert on Wednesday November 5th in London. In the marvellous auditorium ‘The Ocean’ in Hackney, London, which really looks something like a submarine, both bands got together again and got the audience go out of their minds. At the end half of the audience was jumping and dancing or at least tried to. The concert started off with the Muffin Men warming up with some
unexpected, more jazzy Zappa-tunes like ‘Eat that question’,
‘Peaches en regalia’, ‘Marqueson’s chicken’ and finally a more
rocking ‘Let’s move to Cleveland’. Nice, but nobody got hurt,
especially since the Muffin Men, as Zappa did, usually like to blow up
the audience with their first few numbers, mostly played furiously while
meddling zappa-tunes . Roddie Gillard then proudly announced ‘more
serious people’ and Ensemble 10:10 played pieces of Igor Stavinsky,
Charles Ives, Conlon Nancarrow and Edgard Varèse. All neatly introduced
by Ian Gardiner who was (or played) something of a schoolmaster. Some
pieces (e.g. Stravinsky clarinetsolo 3, third ‘postcard’ of Ives)
really showed Frank Zappa’s origins. A short piece featuring
‘Igor’s boogie/Exercise#4/Uncle Meat’ showed what was to be
expected after the break: sheer beauty and fun. |

As if the game was won, both bands showed up with funny heads and indeed all hell broke loose with a piece called ‘Studio Z medley’, anyway that’s what was written on the first ever program brochure on a muffin concert. It featured ‘Run home slow’/’Take your clothes off when you dance’/’Duke of Prunes’. Carl Bowry, in great shape all night, really showed off on that last one! Then followed ‘Little house I used to live in’ with a marvellous introduction by the ensemble, ‘Little umbrellas’, ‘Big swifty’ (mixed with ‘T’mershi duween’ and ‘Dupree’s paradise) and ‘Alien orifice’. The last two pieces were maybe carefully chosen as ‘Sleeping in a jar/Holiday in Berlin’ and ‘King Kong’ were really outstandig. By then all solists had had their fun, with Andy Frizell and of course Carl Bowry on the front row but even members of the ensemble did their thing! It left the band free to play the all excepted ‘Let’s turn the water black’/ Harry you’re a beast’/’The orange county lumber truck’/’Oh no’ and (!) ‘Lumpy gravy’ tunes in a roaring medley as an encore. Muffins technically and most moving ‘serious’ gig ever? Fans who couldn’t make the concert can buy the new CD with all the Zappa music that the Muffin Men play together with the Ensemble 10:10. -- Jos Peeters (with a little help from his friends: Reinier,
Beverly and Zjakki) |

Thanks to mister Andrew G. (yes, he of http://www.idiotbastard.supanet.com/), I was able to get in contact with One Size Fits All, the Scottish band that plays the music of Frank Zappa. Ian Wishart said: The band is based in Edinburgh, Scotland and the line-up is:
We've been together for just over a year now and have played about
half a dozen gigs in Edinburgh. Our first gig was at the Cafe Royal in
Edinburgh on 14th November 2002 and since then we've played a place
called Bannerman's on a number of occasions and another venue called
Whistlebinkies. On December 3rd we're having a Tribute to Frank Zappa night at The

Okay, here's the deal. About a week ago, I had never heard of Zydeco music. Thanks to Kilissa I was able to check out a couple of sites and I have to say that it sounds real good. Party music. Now here's the thing I wanted to talk about: Kilissa mentioned http://www.buckwheatzydeco.com/bwzydecomusic/bwzydecomusic.html, a site that has some music by Buckwheat Zydeco. She also said that i should give 'Hot Tamale Baby' a closer listening. The riff for 'Hot Tamale Baby' is exactly the same as Zappa's 'Willie The Pimp', only a lot faster. 'Hot Tamale Baby' can be found on
But that's a sampler. Buckwheat Zydeco originally recorded this track on:
It got even funnier when I found out that Buckwheat Zydeco did not write this track. 'Hot Tamale Baby' was written by Clifton Chenier, a Zydeco artist who lived from 1927 to 1987, and who recorded most of his hits in the fifties and early sixties. Does anyone have a clue as to when Chenier wrote or recorded 'Hot Tamale Baby'? Any chance that Zappa was familiar with Zydeco music? Or should we assume that Chenier had "Hot Rats" in his record collection? What do you mean, coincidence?
