random notes

     from: jon m. (yourface@myass.com)
wandering into this thread so late that the original post is long gone, i'll assume mention's been made of the zappa medley on the first camper van chadbourne album... ...and proudly note that eugene cribbed that medley from the frank zappa songbook while sitting at my kitchen table back in '86, scribbling the changes in a notebook and smoking an awful lot of dope...

     from: "lacombe, steven" (slacombe@omm.com)
camper van chadbourne's "zappa medley" has been rereleased on an anthology disk with wider distribution (i.e., i was actually able to find and buy it at a record store).  the disk is entitled "used record pile: collaborations of eugene chadbourne and camper van beethoven 1987-1991."  it is a 1999 knitting factory records release (kfr-252) -- www.knittingfactory.com (though i could find no reference to this disk on the website).  i recommend it with marginal enthusiasm, not necessarily for the zappa cut. sounds reminiscent of meat puppets, carmaig deforrest (if you know who that is), hint of residents.  "zappa medley" is a chop-job of absolutely free and let's make the water turn black, drum-less acoustical riffing on absolutely free (with mandolin!) and then alternating verses between water turn black and ab free until you end up with a mangled pseduo-bluegrass breakdown.  i fault the performers for attempting to replicate the sped-up chipmunk voices and ending up sounding tone-deaf.  the back cover of the cd lists 16 songs on 16 tracks.  all 16 songs are represented on the disk in the same order as listed, but my disk, at least, only has 8 tracks, with two tracks containing multiple selections back-to-back.

camper van chadbourne used record pile - popmatters columnist and music critic

  from: http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/c/campervanchadbourne-used.html

i wanted to like this album. i really did. i was never a huge fan of camper van beethoven, but i definitely enjoyed their music and was kind of bummed when they split in 1990. not even david lowry's return with cracker could ever reach the pinnacle of "take the skinheads bowling." plus, the idea of some improvisational guitar genius with '70s radical creds teamed up with the camper van boys seemed like a cool idea.
after pulling used record pile from my cd player, i gave pause to think about how old adages and phrases only ever come into being through some degree of ultimate truth. this time, the phrase is: "it seemed like a good idea on paper." how can i characterize this record? dissonance? noise music? nothing i can come up with can explain how grating and irritating some of the songs on this disc are. it's similar to the cacophony of an orchestra tuning their instruments all at once before the start of a big performance. with vocals.
eugene chadbourne, the aforementioned supposed genius, wrote these tunes, with the exception of a few covers, and to his credit i can see how some people are charmed by the social commentary and overtly political lyrics. songs like "evil filthy preacher" and "ollie's playhouse" (this being ollie north and sung to the tune of the peewee's playhouse theme) have a sharp and funny edge to them that might work if there was something listenable in the music that backs them up. the fact that chadbourne is commonly compared to frank zappa is hardly surprising, nor the fact that they do a tune called "zappa medley." but even the mothers of invention were more musical than this.
to top it off, the recording quality of the disc is flat out terrible. apparently this collection of songs is gathered together from three albums of previous material and some unreleased tracks all recorded in the period from 1987-1991.
thank god that this may mean there isn't more forthcoming material out of this "group." and maybe it's the fact that some of this stuff is more than 10 years old, but i had to crank up the volume on my stereo just to hear the lyrics, well beyond the tolerable limits of volume for which to play the random notes and noises that make up cvc's songs. plus, the disc confused the track listing on my cd player. of the 16 songs on the disc only eight showed up on the display. i wouldn't mind this if it didn't mean that i couldn't skip the really, really bad tracks.
who's this album for? people who like their folk music stripped of tonality, consisting of "jams" that are nothing more than instruments thrust together in whatever combination the musicians think will sound the most like cats howling.

Duck Hunting with Eugene Chadbourne

The DIY indie-music legend arrives once again in New Haven.

(The New Haven Advocate - December 8, 2005)

A sharp-witted musicologist, an idiosyncratic composer, collaborator and cataloguer of everything generally described by music critics as "avant," Eugene Chadbourne has been flying under the radar of the mainstream music industry for the past thirty-odd years. That could be an accomplishment, or maybe his blip was mistaken for an aberration.

Regardless, Chadbourne's output is diverse and voluminous, ranging from traditional American to free-wheeling improvisations to sonic experiments in terror, while making many a whistle stop in between. He has conspired with musical innovators like John Zorn, Fred Frith, and Henry Kaiser, to name a few; Camper Van Beethoven and the Violent Femmes, to name a couple more.

Rest assured, when Eugene's frenzified fingers finish a solo, you may scratch your head wondering if you just watched him play the devil or play the bejesus out of his instrument.

And while you may not find Chadbourne's recordings at the Virgin Mega Store, fear not: You can buy them directly through his website (www.eugenechadbourne.com). "Doc Chad" has documented his own remarkable career with a ceaseless stream of self-releases on his House of Chadula label. Each release has unique packaging, designed and assembled by the artist.

To replace standard jewel cases, Chadbourne chops up and recycles old album sleeves. He then tapes up the loose edges and affixes his own weirdo artwork over what was already there. "This fits into my plot to take all recordings and somehow change them into my own music," he says. "I used to do this with cassettes that I would get from nightclubs, all the demo stuff. Now I am doing it with old album covers."

Would you expect any different from one of the credited architects of the DIY home-taping scene?

In the early '80s, Eugene founded the group Shockabilly, with future Bongwater head Kramer, and propelled the folk-country-rockabilly genres to new frights. It was during this time that Chadbourne the Arch-Innovator premiered a series of solo performance pieces featuring homemade instruments, thus introducing such oddball music-making contraptions as the Electric Rake, the Shopping Cart, the Toast-Ar and the Porthole to bemused and befuddled audiences.

"The Toast-Ar was obviously the best," Chadbourne recalls, "a toaster with a banjo neck attached to it. You

could play a raga on it, and make toast for the audience simultaneously.

"Don't expect to see this in New Haven!"

I've learned to not know what to expect. The last time Eugene came to town, I found myself singing backing vocals on everything from the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks, Fuck Off" to an unlikely version of Michael Jackson's "Beat It."

"Duck Chad!" , Chadbourne's latest release, documents some of his musical travels through 2004-05 and includes four songs recorded, in the Elm City at Café Nine last December, in collaboration with my Captain Beefheart tribute band, Doctor Dark. The session was captured by recording vulture Warren Brelsford. Two of the tracks featured are Beefheart compositions ("Veteran's Day Poppy" and "Plastic Factory"). Two others are solo banjo arrangements: "Lyndie," a lyrically reworked version of the Association's "Windy" that takes dead aim at Lyndie Englund, poster girl for the Iraq prison-abuse scandal, and an inspired, stringed version of the John Coltrane classic "Pursuance."

But despite his creative meandering into others' material, Chadbourne's original compositions are some of the strongest in the batch. "Grey" is a quirky, uplifting exploration into diversity and individuality, with lyrics penned by his daughter Lizzie. The words were in response to comments made by an offensive guest lecturer at her high school who tried to portray people as falling into only two categories. She writes (and Chad sings), with impeccable phrasing:

We stepped out of the world of black.

We tried to never look back.

We ran away from the world of white.

We don't agree with what is said to be right

The results are powerful and infectious.

In "Cheney's Hunting Ducks," Chad bears his draft-dodger street cred and sardonic wit in a catchy country protest condemnation of Operation Enduring Bullshit:

Cheney's hunting ducks.

The troops break for lunch,

soon they get killed a bunch.

Driving armored, an armored truck.

In South Carolina, Cheney's hunting ducks.

It's the lunch break in the War on Terror.

Hide the corpses in the accounting errors.

(For the record, Mr. Chadbourne already has his presidential pardon for ducking Vietnam, whereas five-deferment Dicky may be wishing for a pardon of his own some day.)

Given the political climate of this day and age, I wonder whether Chadbourne's outspoken views have ever clashed with his audience's sensibilities. "Normally," he says, "I am playing to a friendly audience. But once, at a free show in Columbia, South Carolina, a fight broke out between military guys who were mad at my lyrics and ’hippies' who agreed.

"But it is important to note," he adds, "that a show attended by 90 percent Army and Navy in Pensacola went over really well during the Reagan era, and I was told at one point there were more photos of me in the U.S. German Army barracks than any one pin-up."

That's quite an accomplishment for a conscientious objector.

"I was not a CO," he says, by way of correction. "I could not get that status because I did not have a record of attending church! I was a non-registree."

Non-registree sounds good to me.

Where do I sign up?
